New year was never a big deal in my family. Dad usually worked because he traded with someone else to get Christmas off. New Year's Day was when the tree was stripped and the decorations put away. My parents weren't big alcohol consumers, so no celebrations to speak of.

It is tradition amongst many trail riders, to get on our horse(s) on New Year’s Day. Even if it’s a short ride in the freezing cold.

The premise being we would have good trail riding luck for the year - as in no serious accidents.

I did that up until I couldn’t ride anymore.
