One Checkout Line In Walmart, Is This a Trend?

Last time I was in Walmart, I think they had one or two cashiers, with long lines. I went to the large self checkout area. I don't like to have to do that but the lines were ridiculous for the cashier.

Bottom line...there will be more money to spread around with those at the top...don't like it?....the only thing that will change this is for enough people to not use it and complain to Walmart.

I use self checkout if I have only a few items. I do my grocery shopping at Winco where they have cashiers and they are nice. You can only use self checkouts if you have 15 items or less.

Our Walmart has put small items in locked cases. They did this with even cheap items. I am not dragging a clerk around with me to get what I need. Now I just order online and if I buy $35 it comes to my door for free.

This has been instituted at our Walmart as well and goes back to the middle of last year. To make matters worse, they only have one self checkout lane open as well. I haven't been back since, as I refuse to stand in line for half an hour to get out of the store.

I hate those automated check out counters. I swear, when you die and if you go to hell, the first words you'll hear is "Place your item in the bagging area". I can never get those lousy machines to work right, and they seize up, "Assistance is needed". I hate sitting there waiting for a clerk, who is busy chatting with a good looking customer. I found if you start beating on the machines, clerks come really fast. And it does feel good to beat on those damn checkout machines.

We have both at my Walmart store. I prefer the self check-out but when I shop with one of my friends I go with her through the one with a clerk. Always takes longer and I tell the clerk I will pack my own.

I started using the order online and pick up service when Covid started back in 2020 and I've continued to use that service. I hate going into the store....any store. IF I absolutely have to go into WM, I use the self checkout. The less people I come in contact with, the better.

Our WM is having so many problems with theft that I’ve seen a few more cashiers open. They’ve decreased the number of self-checkouts open because they need more attendants to watch as folks use them.
Word is, Walmart and other major chains plan to scrap self-checkouts. Rather than a pay-point, they've become a very popular theft-point.

Per MSN, some Walmarts are talking about a pay-later scheme at self-checkouts only, where they'll extend you a set-amount of credit and then charge you high interest...basically giving you a Walmart credit card with which you'll help them recoup some losses.

That is awful to only have one self checkout lane. We have about 4.

Mrs. Hazy and I went down to our local Walmart Superstore yesterday. When it came time to find a checkout line we found only one, with one lonely checker working there. I gazed out into the massive sea of empty checkout stations thinking there must be another one open somewhere. But I saw nothing, except the self-checkout stations were open.

This was at 10:33 in the morning. I've been there before when there were only two checkout lines open, but this was the first time when there was just one.

It felt kind of strange, I'm in this huge massive store, standing in the one and only checkout line that's open.

Has this happened to anybody else? Is Walmart putting the squeeze on checkers?
I'm gonna guess a lot of checkers were either on break or didn't show up for work.

If they start at 6-6:30am, they hit their 4th hour, when the store is required to give them at least a 30 minute break.

I have wanted to try Walmart+ since they started it, but one thing always stopped me... will they put the groceries on the porch when I'm not here, or do they need to physically deliver inside? This is a very safe area and my neighbors are great watchdogs :giggle: but I'm thinking they wouldn't be allowed to just drop grocery bags on the porch like Amazon or UPS does... is that right, @Happyflowerlady ?
You give a time for your delivery and they drop it off by the front door, take a picture, and leave. My orders have all been correct but my neighbor gets things he never ordered

We've been getting our grocery orders for a couple of years now, at Stop & Shop. Give the order online, mark substitutions if your brand isn't available, and select pick-up time.

Show up on time, park at one of the set aside spots for order pickups, phone the special number and give your name and at what numbered spot you parked.

They'll bring your groceries out and place them in the trunk or on the back seat, whichever you choose and you're on your way. You never have to move from the drivers seat.

It's worked well for me and COVID or not, I don't plan on returning to aisle shopping. Maybe if I was still in my 60's or 70's, but not today. This type of shopping has been a blessing.

And to finish my comments, I do , on occasion grab a few special items at another smaller, nearer grocery store. The two stores BTW are 6 and 3 miles from our home.
