One person per car, alone.

Do you ever think that driving a car big enough for 6-7 passengers is ridiculous when it’s only you going wherever you need to be? Roadways/highways over-flowing with only a driver, in most of the vehicles. How ‘bout one or 2 seater cars built for just those situations? No, not motorcycles.

I don't think it's ridiculous if it's your only vehicle. I have a friend who has one of those multi-passenger vans. It's his only vehicle. What you wouldn't know seeing him alone in it on the highway is that it is used for doing road trips with his grandchildren and doing all kinds of cultural tours with them as often as possible. He also sometimes drives a number of elderly to the grocery store, etc. at the same time.

Is a 2 seater car what you have?
DH and I would have hard time folding our tall frames into one of those!

My little Neon is essentially a two person car. It has a back seat but it must be there for children and dogs never tall people like my son and husband. I can take my son or my friend who can't drive anymore, in the passenger seat, but not two at once.

That's fine with me because most people don't take me seriously when I tell them I can't drive and talk at the same time.

Those are fine those little cars, but they are basically death traps on a highway. I would say they're good if restricted to regular surface streets.

There's also a consideration if you looked at Europe and compared to the USA you would find that public transport is heavily used mainly because the cost of owning a car is so costly in some of those countries.

Plus don't forget that, we are in a country where you could drive for 5-8 hours and still stay in a state whereas you could pass through five different countries in a day over in Europe.

We really have no right to judge others. Do we?

I don't want a subcompact car; that's just too small.

I drive a Corolla. I thought it was mid-size, but just checked and no, it's classified as a compact. When I park, 50% of the time, a couple of monstrosities - vans - SUVs, - whatever - are parked on either side of me, making it impossible for me to back out safely. I don't know what their transportation needs are, but I'm willing to bet a big percentage of them just prefer the current trend of driving big SUVs and trucks.

Found this from 2023: "A recent report stated that 80% of new cars sold in the US are SUVs and trucks, compared to just 52% in 2011."

And found this for 2025: "Approximately 64.8% of vehicles sold in the United States were SUVs and trucks, based on data available for the first half of 2025."

For a while I had a 7 passenger van because I needed a car and it was only $900. It was just me but it was what was available at the time. Plus just because you see one person driving it doesn't mean they don't have a reason like me or the fact that they've got a family of 7 more that you don't see that day. ;)

Here where I live a 4WD is best in the winter.

Exactly!
People do like to judge though....
