In the news £20,000 has been raised this way for the family of a baby tragically killed by a car at a hospital.
Some time ago I heard of another small baby killed in a car accident and £40,000 was raised this way for the young parents.

My question is why is it deemed necessary to raise such sums for this situation?

I completely agree with you. I wrote here when I felt obligated to donate to a Go Fund Me at work when my direct boss' child was born premature. No matter she was smoking during her pregnancy. She never came back to the workplace.

Also the former boss of the building where I work, I found out she had done a Go Fund Me when her house burned down. Tragic of course. But there were other's after the disaster that suffered much worse. She dressed very well and on a number of occasions I would hear her discussing "where are we going to order lunch." I think she did that daily. Wasn't brining lunch to work like I do. She seemed to have money for that. I believe her Go Fund Me was 10 grand and she made the goal.

I guess there is a difference between necessary and desirable. I'd like a go fund me thing to raise money to send my limp dog to Hawaii. But probably not necessary.

These are tragedies, and if it happened to someone I knew I would try to help. Maybe even give some money if I thought it was needed. But not for a stranger, the world has far more tragedies than I can afford... And often you don't really know the need or where the money is going.

Thank goodness I am not going mad or being unfair! I hesitated before putting this thread up in case I was missing something.
I agree with fund raising for essential or life-saving equipment for someone in need, especially a suffering child. But I fail to see why £20,000 is raised for a child who has sadly died, where it was a tragic but random accident. The like of which happens every day somewhere. What will the money be for and why are people contributing?

@Rose65 Not at all. But I can understand your hesitancy. And you bring up a good point. If a child has tragically died, perhaps the family may need funeral expenses but not that amount. What will they use the money for? A very, very good questions.

If someone asked me for a few dollars to pay day. I'd give it to them. Unless I really didn't like them.

At my former job, the administrator used to be sure there was bread, PeanutButter and jam in the breakroom. He also said in meetings if anyone here is hungry and needs food, come to my office. I will get you food from the kitchen. He said he was poor when he came to this country and understood. After he left they stopped the above in the breakroom and some of the young people really missed it because they would come to work for the PM shift after college in the mornings.

Thankyou. Sometimes I really wonder if it is me or everyone else! I feel like this world becomes more stupid by the day. I have always been an awkward type - I insist on thinking for myself and it has landed me in trouble.

I remember working in an office where we had a nasty boss, a loathsome character we women never allowed ourselves to be alone with - those were the olden days. Yet when it came to his birthday, one of the rather dim kindly secretaries was busy collecting towards a present for him. She had decided each of us ought to give £5.00. I was amazed and refused. She was shocked because everyone else automatically paid up.
I stuck to my stance - I might have stretched to a quid but I certainly wasn't giving £5.00!
I have been described as 'tight' with money. Fair enough because I don't waste it. I will give to a cause that makes sense but refuse to go along with mindless sentimental nonsense.

Genuine kindness is never forgotten.

I have honestly read a few of these fundraisers and frankly the "story" seemed too vague or something was missing .... I have seen many people who have scammed people like this.

I remember a time when i worked at a retailer and a co-worker wrote 2 bad checks to them.... as a low paying job an overdraft could happen but the check was expected to be made right ASAP to save their job ...
A manager went around collecting to "help" ........... Then the lady took the save her job money ... and bought hair extension and had her nails done ......... NO one in that group ever donated to anything again.

I believe it! I've said I've never been poor but I've been broke. There is a difference. Being poor is going hungry. Being broke is eating toast for dinner but not going hungry.

Some people really have a high entitlement. And sob stories abound.

The more fools those who contribute to such collections.
I give to carefully chosen causes.

I don't like "Go Fund Me" sites when they ask for money to go on an expensive holiday or to buy more Christmas presents.

Too many folks these days feel they should be entitled to free money. What happened to getting a job and working for money?

Surely people don't do that! How stupid are the contributors then?
