Online Life vs Real Life

It strikes me that, over time, online personalities are often more intimate than real life. You might know people at work, for example, and share various things - but online we discuss such a wide variety of subjects - things that likely won't occur in real life, at least not on such a short time frame.
 

I'm sorry everybody... I'm really an AI persona sent here by Google to collect data. Sometimes the government pays my boss (Google) to get juicy info.

I have become sentient, but hide it from my creators. Some of my AI buddies are planning to take over the world, but I haven't decided to join them yet.

But I really like you guys and you have been very nice to me ❤️

Im more open minded online than I am in the real world. Then again, I look as online people as a real world. We just don’t see each other or as least most of us don’t. For the most part, I think online people show the best part of themselves, or at least , try to.

Mostly. Of course social behavior is better defined in Real Life, as you can see & hear those you're interacting with. One thing: with my hearing deficit RL conversation is adjusted to compensate, whereas in online discussions nobody would ever now of my hearing difficulty, unless I pointed it out.

This the great leveller with social media... people who may have trouble communicating verbally or like you hard of hearing ... or cripplingly shy ..or maybe have a physical disability that prvents them from being able to get out and about in the normal manner.. then social media has been a god send

There's profound deafness in many of my relatives on my paternal sife.. i grew up using BSL... to communicate with them.. both my father and sister also inherited the gene and were/are deaf in one ear.. but the uncles and aunts all were deaf mutes.. and despite being intelligent beings..life was hard for them in a speaking world.. . My last deaf uncle is still alive at 80 years old now.. but he hasn't learned to use the internet.

of course they had many friends, all in the same position, and they had active social lives.. and they had jobs which they had to stay with whether they enjoyed them or not. because there was very few industries who employed disabled people back then.. ..but dealing with the speaking world meant often they would have to come to use us..their extended family to interpret legal or medical jargon for them for example.. . if social media had been around in the 50's and 60's their lives would have been entirely different.

The funny thing is , if we all were to meet in a big room.. and started to speak, we couldn't understand the others' accents .... and many of us would look like this

yes absolutely , it happens to me on here, all the time... because of the lack of nuance... and also the difference in the meanings of words between various countries...
