Online questions people ask about retirement

Boy, oh boy! Articles that declare "I'm 67 and have $3.5 million in cash, stocks, bonds and 401k. I'd get the maximum SS check of $3822/mo and a pension of $4K/month. I have no mortgage. Can I afford to retire?"

Get real!

I'm living only with CPP, OAS, work pension of $172 a month(which will end in 14 years), and $120,000 in savings. I'm doing fine. But we don't go for vacations, don't go out to eat, don't go out for entertainment. I have my hobbies that I enjoy and meet one friend for coffee every two months. If I need socializing, I go to the Seniors Centre or church. My hubby gets about the same in CPP, OAS and has about $58,000 in savings. He does not go out at all - enjoys crosswords and tv and balcony gardening. We are doing fine. Oh, and we have paid off our condo.
