Online Reviews. This One Regards Etsy.

I was looking at fabric on Etsy. I do need my head examined for this, haven't bought anymore. Yet. Anyway, I check a shops reviews. One reviewer whined that the fat 8ths had selvedge edges and it wasn't all usable fabric. Which is a ridiculous review. I'd completely ignore that silly review. When I have a small piece of fabric, I put that edge into the seam.

However the shop owner in her response toasted that reviewer at length, stating she was confused with another shop as she checked and she left the same review for another shop. You can look up reviews by Etsy user names on Google. So I did look up this reviewer and she did leave the same review for another shop. Actually another shop who's fabric I was looking at also. That shop owner wisely ignored that silly review.

So first shop, won't get my business due to her rather rude response back. You run a business, sometimes dealing with odd people. Anyone who knows fabric would know to ignore that review and the shop owner was stupid to reply like that. So when I lose my mind and order, I will from the second shop.

Ever swayed by online reviews? I once saw one on Ebay when the seller called a reviewer a stupid moron or something like that. No way would I buy from that person.

Never bought off Etsy but if the majority of reviews are positive I would ignore the few that were not.

Remy, I did not know you could even buy fabric online. Guess I thought that most would like to actually feel the fabric. Have you had good results.
Yes I have. There are actual web sites that sell fabric and supplies and a lot of fabric sellers on Etsy. I've had good luck with online fabric buying and I was looking for some small cuts in a variety of colors. That's why I was looking at the fat 8th bundles.

I get good cuts (a good inch or two extra) where I find Joann's can be very stingy with their cuts. We have a local quilt shop that is decent. I also look for fabric in thrift shops. PAWS had 3 boxes recently and I got some good pieces.

I have been buying fabric online for years, from a dozen sources. Etsy is NOT on my favorite list.

Whenever I’m ready to purchase anything I diligently seek reviews and a lot of them. From there I take the average review that has the highest score from the majority of people.

There are always going to those difficult people to please which I recognize and usually ignore. If there are many reviews complaining about the same situation, then I take that into consideration.

There are several hard to find items I purchase from Etsy but over the years I have found similar products much cheaper and much closer that I now purchase.

Whatcha’ making Remy?

Online reviews tend to be either glowing or bad......
most customers only bother to write if item was better then expected or a bad situation...... most negative silly reviews can be spotted on many items and people can see through them ..................but i would agree with you to avoid businesses that overreact to a bad review.

I haven't bought fabric from Etsy, but I've bought several handcrafted items that I've been happy with.

I have to agree about Joann's. Not only are they stingy, they often don't cut the fabric properly and their clerks are less than helpful. I don't like going there, but they're the only game in town. There used to be a great little store in town that was my go-to place, but they closed several years ago.

I've checked out fabric on line but haven't bought anything because I like to see and feel what I'm buying, but next time I need some, I'll take oldaunt's suggestions and try buying it online as long as I can return it.

I have bought fabric from Etsy.
It was quality fabric. I forget what shop it was from.
I usually only buy “special project“ fabric from there.
I read the reviews also and the shop responses. They does make a difference to me too. 💕

Unfortunately, some people cannot take criticism even if it's incorrect criticism and this Etsy seller isn't smart enough to know that what she stated hurts her bottom line, not what the reviewer incorrectly stated. Which IMO is a nothing review. Yes fabric comes with a selvage edge.

And I guess you never know who you are or potentially are buying from online.

If I’m making a simple quilt for home use or solid colors only I go to Walmart and buy the Waverly fabric.
It’s a nice thickness and the colors do not bleed when washed.
😊
