The Ontario Premier, Doug Ford announced yesterday that all Ontario elementary school teachers will receive a shopping card with a $750 limit, to be used to buy arts and crafts and stationary supplies for their classrooms this coming September. This program covers all of the school boards in the Province of Ontario, which has a population of 15 million people. So an elementary school with 22 teachers will get $15,000 to be able to buy supplies, and other classroom items. Each teacher will be able to buy items that are important for their grade level. The program is focused on buying materials at Canadian wholesale companies to get the best prices on supplies. No US products will be allowed to be bought under this program. JIMB.

First of all I'm absoutely taken aback that there is only 15 million people in the whole of Ontario.... and they won't let me in... but secondly.. has there been a shortage ofarts/crafts & stationary supplies in the recent past in Canadian schools ?

It’s an interesting approach to a problem that we have in our public school system.

Many, many public school teachers spend their own money on things that they feel are important for their students while others spend nothing.

IMO the teachers and the school district should be able to work together to provide all necessary items from the annual school budget without using personal funds supplied by teachers, parents, and local businesses.

The $750.00 credit line may be a sensible compromise or it may be just another example of an attempt to deal with a flawed public education system. 🤔

Please note that this program in Ontario applies to all schools, not just public ones. Catholic, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish schools are all included in this program.
