I think there've been a couple problems and I haven't followed it as closely as I should, but I think one thing was the construction of a new power plant and then the current government got in and for some reason they cancelled the project (maybe something like way over budget - punish the builder(?) and thus they lost all the money they had spent, and something to do with paying a huge price for electricity from Quebec, and the disappearance of the manufacturing industry from the province and that has hurt big time for years.
And I believe part of the reason that industry left is because of the high price of electricity because the plants use a lot of power. I heard one economist say that many have actually relocated to South Carolina which apparently is thriving because of it. That state's government has made it extremely attractive for plants to locate there. Great tax rate, energy rates, reasonable wages, low land costs......
You know, I never understand why governments are looking more at the success stories around the world to see what might be better ways to build better and stronger communities. It's like little kids when they push your hand away and tell you, "I can do it myself". .........even if it means not doing it as good as they could.
(by the way, if I'm off on the above explanation and a fellow Canadian wants to correct me, I'd appreciate it
