Open shelving in the kitchen

That's what I'm guessing. They get the open shelves, fill them with beautiful matching sets of dishes, stemware and casserole sets, maybe in a pattern to go with that modern farmhouse look @seadoug mentioned -- then go out to eat. You know they're all loaded.

Other things HGTV likes are pedestal sinks in the bathroom with a pretty mirror against the wall above it, leaving zero place to put so much as a toothbrush. My pet dislike are the TVs hung above the fireplace making my neck hurt just to glance. at it.
I totally agree! Speaking of sinks, I have seen HGTV decorators use wall mounted sinks in bathrooms. Vintage gas station style. No thanks. Laundry room maybe...

One place that might be okay for open shelving is over a coffee bar. Gives a place for coffee cannister, sugar and creamer, cups. Those things get used daily in our house.

Open shelving in the kitchen - love it!! 80 inches wide/11 inches deep with 2 shelves.
- Lower shelf: every day dishes, mugs, glasses - never need dusting as these are used almost daily;
an "upside down" cloth rack (?) attached to the lower shelf (over the sink) - no scrunched up damp dish cloth.
- Upper shelf: black Japanese dishes (from garage sale), travel mugs, 3 French presses for coffee. don't see any dust so there ARE NONE!! LOLOL

Not for me, but they're pretty to look at on TV. My kitchen cupboards hide a multitude of kitchen clutter sins:ROFLMAO:

Having cats I can't do it, just the thought of it gives me a panic attack.
Good thing you don't have a cat that opens cabinets when he's bored. Bugsy's foster mom warned us that he could open cabinets and drawers, and the first night he stayed in my home office with his treats in the desk drawer he opened the drawer and the bag and there were treats all over the floor in the morning. We've literally been eating dinner and have watched him open cabinets. Upper or lower, doesn't matter. And you can see that he has a partner in crime!

While we’re talking about comments on HGTV when the buyer wants white cabinets, “it’s just paint, it’s easy”. No it’s not if you do it right.
I can attest to that. I painted my own kitchen cabinets using a (rather expensive) self leveling paint. It took several weeks of painstaking work. Remove all the old hardware, remove doors, paint the cabinet boxes, paint the doors, wait a few days, repaint second coat on everything, reinstall doors and new hardware. Whew!

I could have called someone to do all that, but I didn't have a couple thousand dollars at the time! I highly recommend Benjamin Moore self leveling paint. It shows no brush marks and is slick as a factory finish.

I built this while we put in a kitchen in the old tavern building we refurbished to live in. That was 15 years ago. We have a cat that does occasionally get up there. Not good. We sometimes have to wash the dishes. The top shelf is for storing rarely used stuff. We don't keep many dishes there so we rotate most of them in about a week. It has worked fine, and the dishes are far from the stove so no grease.

Very nice! And your plan in keeping it that way is great.

I tried the hanging the tv over the fireplace thing, and I will never do that again.

Oh, I feel your pain, Sir Lycha Puss is always opening cupboards and draws, not bad for a creature without thumbs. :LOL:
I actually store his treats in a cupboard that has a child lock on it. ( Just waiting to see if he can work it out)
