Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network To Honor Black Fathers With TV Special

I am a super liberal., and some of you know my views. I tell you that because I've been seeing promos for this TV show. I have to say this is pretty tacky. I believe being a father transcends racial lines. While a black father may have obstacles, so do the fathers of other racial families. We know what being a good father entails, and I don't think the amount of melanin in your skin deters anyone from being a good father. Focusing only on black fathers is insensitive at best. If Fox, had a show about the issues related exclusively to white fathers, and had promos running 10 times an hour, I doubt the streets would be quite and peaceful. Yes, black fathers have issues, but so do all fathers. I feel by not including all fathers, on a show about fathers' issues, it separates black fathers from all fathers, and the focus should be on the inclusion of everyone.
That's my 2 cents.

While I understand why you feel what you've expressed the fact is Black fathers have always gotten a bad rap. They are judged by the bad fathers out there. I've heard it almost my entire life. Since Oprah's shows cover so many issues not particular to any race I ain't mad at her for wanting to celebrate Black fathers. With her viewership that reaches the masses, she's in a position to shed some light and (hopefully) destroy some myths of Black fatherhood. And I believe your point about if Fox news did it on White fathers is probably correct.

I guess what struck me was the optics. Days before Father's Day, there's a two hour special "celebrating black fatherhood". I don't think fatherhood comes in colors, nor races. It's akin to a two hour show about the bravery of just white men on Veterans Day.
