We hired a young contractor (he's 29) who did a beautiful job for friends of ours with a remodeled kitchen and bathroom.
We needed extensive work done on the house we bought sight-unseen in February. The entire kitchen needed ripped out and replaced, the master bathroom needed everything done also, and a family room needed redone (it still had the old orange carpet and paneling from the 60's). We also wanted the brick painted on the outside of the house and new garage lights and porch lights installed.
He came over in March and sat down with us and discussed what we wanted and went home and worked up a price for each individual room, etc. We agreed; paid him a deposit to get started, and then just before the starting date (May 9th), he brought his dad, who was going to do the work and had been in the business for over 30 years, to look at everything that needed to be done.
The job was started on time (May 9th) and it was going very smoothly (a lot of dust and dirt but we expected that) and when certain things were finished, the contractor would come over and look at it and make sure it was completed and done as planned and then we'd pay for that allotted price.
Then, one morning, on a Saturday, at 6:30am, the contractor showed up at the house unannounced. We had no idea why he was there. I wasn't even up yet so my husband came and woke me up. When I went downstairs, the contractor was in the kitchen with my husband and he (the contractor) had the strangest look on his face. It was like he wasn't even seeing what he was looking at. He just stared. Then he turned to me and said, "What have you been telling my dad to do?" I was dumbfounded.....and a little afraid of him. I told him I hadn't been telling his dad to do anything. Then, he just turned around and walked away and left.
We knew something was really wrong with him. When his dad called on Saturday night, he asked if we'd seen his son and I told him what happened. To make a long story shorter...his dad finally told me that his son had run out of his medication a while back and hadn't gotten a renewal and he went off the deep end.
Then, yesterday, the contractor billed us for some extras we had asked for and I was going to put a check in the mail to him but he said he wanted to come get it. He was the same as before. He made some nonsensical statement and then just got in his truck and left. I told my husband that there's no way he should be driving. We live about 45 minutes from his home/shop and it concerned me. The job has been finished and his dad had been looking after him since that episode the first time, but his dad took some time off after our job was finished and he's in another part of the state.
I don't know how long it takes for medication to get back into his system to get him straightened out, but he doesn't seem any better after a month. I'm not sure of his diagnosis (his dad wouldn't say), but he's been diagnosed for over 8 years according to his dad. He scared me yesterday. His eyes are just "blank" and he reminds me of one of those people that would kill someone else and not even know they did it.
