Our microwave is conking out.

Tried to reheat a cup of coffee and sparks were flying. It's still under warranty but repairman won't be here until Tuesday evening.

Hey Phil, you could write a book about my experience.

"ROUGHING IT......FIVE DAYS WITHOUT A MICROWAVE"

"ROUGHING IT......FIVE DAYS WITHOUT A MICROWAVE"

LOL!

Day 1: I can do this. I've been in worse situations. I will purchase a small pot with which to heat my coffee on the stove.

Day 2: Well, the stove thing panned out (no pun intended). I bumped into the handle while I was re-heating my coffee and got 2nd-degree burns for my troubles.

Tried fixing the microwave, kept at it until midnight. Tomorrow will tell ...

Day 3: Curses! More sparks, one of which fell upon the cat and sent him into a dizzying race around the kitchen, throwing sparks and flames onto everything. The bag of flour in the corner exploded, showering the entire room with white powder.

...

Free yourselves!

We got rid of our microwave over a year ago, and haven't missed it at all. Now we either reheat in a streamer or in the oven and the food tastes so much better. And it only takes not even a few minutes to heat up a cup of coffee in a small pan.

I hate to admit it, but as a minimalist I thoroughly enjoy the microwave. It's convenient for re-heating coffee quickly without the need of dirtying another pot, and for those horrible frozen breakfast sandwiches that I sometimes indulge myself with it's SO much easier to nuke 'em for a minute than to turn on the oven (after removing all the pots and pans that are stored in it), wait 20 minutes for it to come to temperature, then finally put the food in for a few minutes.

I'm spoiled, I know. :( But it's one of my few guilty indulgences.

I've had my Sharp for many years with no problems. Use it several times/day.

I would never attempt trying to fix one; too dangerous.

It's cheaper and safer to simply buy a new one. They don't cost that much.

We have a countertop microwave stored in the garage that still works. Just don't have room for it. I've never had a problem like this with one before. I'm thinking they might replace this one rather than try to fix it. Depending on what they find wrong with it of course.

Back when I was doing commercial cleaning one of my accounts was a restaurant that was updating their equipment. The owner asked if I wanted any of their old stuff - I immediately had visions of filling my kitchen with massive floor-standing Hobart mixers and pizza ovens, but I settled for one of their microwaves (Litton commercial model).

That thing was a beast. Day in and day out, for years, that microwave saw thousands of popcorn bags, cups of coffee, frozen snacks and, that one drunken night, 3 hamsters. It never failed to do its duty quickly and ruthlessly.

Oh my gosh, take away anything but not my microwave. It's worth a fortune to me in just reheating things. I had to replace my over the stove unit last year, but I couldn't live w/o one....or think I couldn't. But good for you in breaking the dependency.

I still have a microwave, but after reading about how it destroys most of the nutrients in food, I no longer use it for cooking any food, except maybe popcorn, and heating up coffee or soup.
The veggies look so fresh after being cooked in the microwave that I thought they would also be the healthiest ones, but then I read how the microwave destroys the vitamins, and even the dna of food, so our digestive system does not even recognize it as food anymore.
It is actually about as fast to steam the veggies on the stove as to microwave them, so once I broke the habit of using the microwave, it went pretty well after that.

Used to think I couldn't live without one, but almost a year ago our microwave gave up the ghost. We put off getting a new one, and have adapted very well without. Don't miss it one bit. Amazing how quickly you can heat something up in a skillet.
Yep that's us too! I know I already mentioned it.

I am an advocate of throwing out your microwave, I feel strangely liberated going back to the old ways.

I don't want to do without the microwave. Much cheaper to use than stove top or oven. Oven takes so long to heat up. You'll spend more on gas or electricity than a microwave will cost not to mention the time saved.

I don't want to live without my microwave either..lately though, the fan has intermittenly been making a screeching noise. Mr. O has taken it apart twice, and so far this time it's behaving. Dealing with vehicle repair issues right now, only need one problem at a time!
