Out of Africa.

At dawn on the African veldt, the lions and cheetahs awake knowing that they must run after prey to keep from starving.

Also, the dainty antelopes and bearded wildebeests know that they, too, must run to save their lives.

At dawn on the African veldt, when the sun comes up, SOMEBODY better be haulin' ass !

"What are we eating for 2014"?

We can't be too shocked at animal behavior as we are the top predators on the planet. Everything has to eat, but am not keen on watching wildlife shows showing 'kills' or animals chomping on something [even though WE do!] I have often thought how hard it must be to not know where the next meal is coming from, and sadly there are still many people in this world who that applies to.

I thoroughly enjoy watching "Big Cat Diaries" which airs each day on the Animal Planet channel at 7:00 a.m. I especially love the cheetahs. With their ability to run at speeds up to 60 m.p.h., they are the fastest cat on the planet. Like all the cats, they do have issues with predators stealing their food and killing their cubs. The hyenas are the worse of the worse for killing all cubs, except maybe the lion, if the leader of the pride is nearby. Male lions will normally kill other lion cubs that they have not fathered to eliminate the competition. They choose to keep their own alive because their cubs are the lifeline of future generations of the pride. Male lions, if given the opportunity, will kill the matriarch of the hyenas to protect their pride.

I hope to someday take a trip to Africa and go on a photo safari. I had a friend that did this and he has a blog on it. This friend is maybe 32-35 years old and has traveled all over the world. He and his wife are school teachers with no children and this was their goal when they first got married. If you want to see the world, you have to check out my friend's blog. I am sure that he doesn't mind me sharing with anyone. For a young fellow, he definitely has his head screwed on straight.

Go, Oldman, go!

I have been to Kenya twice, many years ago; and went to South Africa last year.
it was a magical experience; both large animals, and the smaller ones; and the birds were fantastic.

I learnt to spot both while other people were driving; I can't wait to go back...

Now that I am retired and have free travel on the airline that I worked for, we have just been talking about going to Africa. This is the one place that I have always wanted to go. I hear the sunsets and the music are just something to behold. I have been looking at safari companies for the purpose of taking pictures. I do worry somewhat about the diseases over there. I have heard many stories, both good and bad from people that have visited there.

I have never caught anything; although I did ensure that I had the right jabs, and anti-malarials!

I have found that because tourism is so necessary for the economy that food etc was really good; and some of the lodges in the game parks are outstanding.

Provided you don't try to go too cheap, and travel with a good company and guide, I think you will be fine.
it is breathtaking; sunsets, stars at night, the noises, .....the pictures just appear; and the memories....
