During this devastating virus pandemic has anybody experienced appointment discrimination? A couple of weeks ago I was making a appointment for a knee injury. The doctors office asked if I was over 60? I said 65. She was trying to avoid giving me an appointment then asked if it was urgent? I said I ve been hurting for 3 weeks and have trouble walking...So YES. I’ve heard of other Seniors experiencing
This. Has anyone Else? Be aware it might? Report it to your insurance company. Be Safe and Healthy 🙏

Have you heard anything about a Corona virus?? They have made it clear that people over 60 are at greater risk of dying from Covid-19 and should self-isolate. That means STAYING OUT of public places, including doctors offices, ERs, etc. If you're over 65, your insurance company is probably Medicare; I imagine they would give you the same advice. 😷

So what? that’s discrimination because I did not have the coronavirus NOT everybody who’s over 60 is going to get it and Die? There are young people dying from it too. to deny me medical service which is against the law actually, it is in California. There are signs in doctors offices saying service cannot be refused. I suggest you do your homework? 😷

You choose to be offended instead of thankful that your doctors office is following pandemic virus protocol ? A doctors office, hospital, nursing home are the most dangerous places to be. Plus these people need to protect themselves and their other patients also. You’re right! There are young people dying from it. Even more reason to follow protocol.
It’s not all about you!

I suggest you do YOUR homework.

Where the heck is your Empathy?? Let’s see if you feel the same way if you or someone you know is refused treatment? The doctors office was set up for this, there was NO reason why they couldn’t see me, there weren’t Any other patients there. The CDC said we could go out if we need medical assistance. DO YOUR HOMEWORK??? You might Need Mental Assistance for thinking because of our age we’re less important. KARMA

Where is MY empathy?
I was the one who stuck up for you when others called you a troll. That’s where my empathy is.
If it was someone I really cared about , I’d be EXTREMELY concerned. Just because YOU CAN go out , doesn’t make it wise or sensible.

I might need mental assistance for MY THINKING?😳🙄🤦‍♀️

You should just ignore what they told you and hang out at the doctors office until they see you. If they don’t maybe you could call the police. Get them involved. Call social services! Get them involved.

Maybe call your local newspaper. Get your story in the newspaper about your unfair treatment.

It could read “senior refused ‘doctors office’ appointment during the pandemic.

Get people to sign a petition all while using social distancing of course. That’ll teach ‘em?

I feel bad for you @Patnono that you can't get the treatment you need due to this pandemic. I can understand your frustration since you've been in chronic pain. OTOH, there's a protocol that doctor's offices are following so keep that in mind.

If you decide to call your insurance, be calm when you explain your situation to the representative. In my experience, people tend to work with me if I'm pleasant to them.

I hope you get relief from your pain soon.

Same song, different verse Keesh. :D:D (It's "Crisis of the Month" time.)

My SO and I are happy as clams that we haven't been to a DR office for over a month. Next appointment is in mid May for me, which I suspect will be cancelled since it is for an exam of sorts with a specialist.

Patnono, hope you get your situation resolved to your satisfaction.

If you truly think that a sore knee is worth the risk of picking up the coronavirus and possibly dying of it, then go for it. I don't think you'll get anywhere, though. Those safeguards are there for a very important reason. The decision is probably not the doctor's, rather it is probably mandated by your state's public health emergency orders, like it or lump it.

I've been to a Dr. for a swollen painful knee. She diagnosed it to be arthritis and prescribed Advil or Aspirin. Can't take either one.

Then she said I'll need an X-ray. Blah thanks. Had it done.

You need to go to an Orthopedist. Orthopedist says I'll need MRI before I come in. Wonderful. Had that done. He squeezed my knee here and there until I jumped. Said cartilage is torn but not too bad. We can give you something so it doesn't hurt. Great! Got an injection into the knee. Helped but not 100%.

Took to wrapping my knee with an Ace Bandage if I was going to do a lot of walking. Wore a brace I bought at Wal Mart for when I'm just around the house until the swelling went down. I do that now when it acts up and skip the rest.

I'm 76, next appt. (primary) in three weeks. Wonder if they'll cancel. Not really interested in seeing this doc, who thinks I'm 25 simply because labs and BP are normal. Labs no longer include PSAs for guys over 70.

In fact, he has tried talking me down to one visit a year rather than the current two. He couldn't care less about what actually bothers me, i.e., musculoskeletal issues of the upper extremities in the form of arthritis, torn labrum, and torn rotator cuff.

I'm mainly interested in picking up the prescription for BP (prefer paper via USPS rather than electronic ordering). If they don't let me in the office I guess I'll ask 'em to mail it to me.

I've heard stories of people trying to maintain and keep regular treatment & appointments for existing issues being declared an emergency by their doctors so they could be 'squeezed' in.

Walking is a necessity or 'essential' for most humans so should the service to maintain that ability.

Before I had my knee scoped for the second time, I was given injections of Cortisone, (maybe 3 or 4), but that only helped for maybe a few moths. Then, I was given three injections at one per week for three weeks of a substance called, Synvisc, which is made from crushed rooster combs, if you can believe it. That worked well for almost a year. After the pain came back again, I opted for the scope. All better for the past 3 or 4 years.

I was really impressed with the Synvisc injections. After week one, I thought "Crap. This isn't going to work." After week two, I thought, "Well, it does feel a little better, so maybe it will work out." After week three, I thought, "Wow! This is good stuff." And the best part was that Medicare paid for the treatment, but your doctor must get pre-approval.

Swelling usually comes from water on the knee or a leakage, like maybe blood. Maybe get it drained and try the cortisone. I suffered with my knees for years before I decided to do something about them. I was a runner up and until 6 months ago. I haven't run outside since last October. Running on hard roads is not good. I like running on the track at the local high school. Much better running on a track that has spring to it.

doctors do discriminate because of your age--i had a doctor appointment and i always get there 15 minutes early--i sat their 3 hours before she ever called me back --in the meantime people just coming in would get called back-when i got ready to leave the girl at the desk said i dont know why she did this to you--all i needed was to have my prescriptions refilled

Does your doctor's office offer tele-visits? Might that be an option? Some doctor's offices in my area closed down temporarily. Those that stay open are following the recommended guidelines for this virus. That being said...I feel for anyone who is suffering with chronic pain and feels they can't get the medical help they need. Being in pain increases the levels of frustration and feelings of vulnerability. I know because my DIL is going through it right now. Hope this issue somehow gets resolved.

Have you asked them about Telemedicine? They can do your appt. on the internet via a video chat.

My doctors office would not see anyone, only video conversations. The proctologist office was loud and a little pissed when they said "no appointments!" I was tempted to tell her to kiss my butt since it was the proctologist's office.

I just saw my dr two weeks ago, no problem and I’ve never seen that sign that says “Can’t refuse service” at any of my drs offices and I live in California.

All that was done differently was that a nurse came out to reception area and took my temp before calling me back.
