Owner temporarily closes diner after customers were rude to staff

There are many businesses etc that have signs referring to short staff ........
i do not understand how people who have no patience or manners do not decide "hey maybe i should go somewhere else"
or perhaps they cannot read either.
I agree. "They probably cannot read either." It's so nice (for them) to live in this "dumb and dumber" society that is being promoted by our society! They fit in real good!

It's not just restaurants, due to lack of staff those in retail are facing the ignoramusus that had to be somewhere else 10 minutes ago.

Then they hold up a line even more wasting precious moments berating whoever was unfortunate enough to be on the cash while the patient customers wait.

My son works at a cash register. All day long he listens to customers blame him for prices that are fixed at headquarters in another state, so I feel for the workers, but in this case we only heard one side of the story.

I've never been rude to, or "snapped at" a waiter, but we don't know how long these customers had waited. Maybe they waited for ages and then their order was wrong. Maybe they were snapping at the waiters because they were chatting with friends or texting on their phones while customers waited. We don't know, the reporter didn't ask.

The owner seems to expect the customers to be extra understanding if she is short staffed, but that really isn't the customer's problem it's hers. If the owner didn't have a cook, enough waiters, or a busboy maybe she shouldn't have opened at all, rather than expect customers to be endlessly patient.

Things did get worse during the pandemic and we got used to poorer service as the prices doubled.

We went out to eat for breakfast last week. I ordered an egg and pancakes. The pancakes came without the egg and they were a pale beige color. When I put my fork in one the batter flowed out. I think they had barely touched the griddle. I couldn't eat the meal, but we didn't complain, we just paid our money and tipped well as usual, but we probably wont go back.

It certainly is a different world, isn't it? Customer service doesn't exist anymore. I remember some years ago when customer service went down the toilet and businesses realized you have to take care of the customer and it came back. Only to lose it again! I believe it has to do with the "entitled" generation. Too busy texting, etc.

Maybe someday that whole tipping business will go away as it should have a hundred years ago. Why did Skinny Vic's staff go elsewhere? Because they wanted a standard living wage with benefits they could count on without depending on the kindness of strangers. Restaurant owners should pay at least minimum wage to all their staff instead of expecting the customers to pay them. If they have to raise menu prices -- well they did that didn't they? Who benefitted? Not the waiters.

I disagree. Waiters are prompted to give the best service possible when there is tipping. When regular customers give a decent tip, (12-20 %) the waiters know them and give great service.

Moreover, waiters will always try to increase the bill by recommending items that make for a better meal. Obviously, this also helps the establishment.

Additionally, if the waiter recognizes that the customer is a tourist, he will, time allowed, tell the customer about sites to see and other interesting things about that locale.

PS: the word "tip" is short for "to insure prompt service".

All over town, bank tellers, store clerks, secretaries, hotel desk clerks (all of which I've been) and almost every other job you can think of, are all trying to do the best job they can without the expectation of tips. They balance someone's checkbook for her, sell the clothes for the company, give advice at the register about how to cook the food, tell tourists about the locale, etc. What makes waiters so different that you think they wont do a good job without the carrot of a tip?

What makes me think so ?
In Europe, the "tip" is included in the check. Well, I have heard/read that waiters in Europe, especially France, are darn nearly surly, and look down their noses at customers.

Moreover, I don't agree that other customer service occupations are trying their very best. In MY experience, one is lucky to find a customer service rep that bends over backwards to please me.

I have had a lot of odd jobs in my day. I have worked in restaurants as a dishwasher and as a short order cook.

Folks...DO NOT EVER piss off your wait staff. Those folks will, LITERALLY, spit in your food.

There has not been a single restaurant I worked for or with that did not have some staff who did those things.

I wish I was joking, but I am not.

I am not justifying what they do, I certainly think it is disgusting. But it is, the way it is.

THEY WILL SPIT IN YOUR FOOD.

My very first job was as a waitress in a nice restaurant in Charleston. I never saw anything like that but I wouldn't be surprised. The talk from the older waitresses made my 18 year-old ears burn.

One more reason tipping should be banned -- there is more sexual harassment in the restaurant business, from both managers and customers than any other -- it's partly because men feel free to touch the waitresses and make off-color jokes because they hold the power of the tip and the waitresses are afraid if they don't put up with it they'll lose the tip.

If the server is overworked, I wouldn’t say anything & I’d still tip. In your case, I would have sent the food back and not paid; I wouldn’t ask for a replacement meal either. There’d be a tip based on the reaction of the server.

just a casual observation .... we have gone out in hometown and then current city which is in suburbs of large city...
The smaller city you can still get Good service because they know word of mouth etc could curtail return customers......

The bigger the population the worse service often IMO because they simply do not care if you return etc there are many who will fill the tables without you
