P-38 and P-51 Military Can Opener

I have a GI Pocket Can Opener that I bought years ago. My elderly Navy vet neighbor said "good Lord, you're gonna slice your finger off with that thing!" and it's still in my junk drawer unopened.

A friend who was in the Army gave me one of those. Never had field rations in the Navy. Always had hot meals aboard ship or in base galley.

I don't like the folding feature of those in the YouTube video. I have one that is a style without the hinge. I've been using it since I bought it in the early 1980s. It's super easy to open cans with it.

I had a retired Army coworker that had one that he brought home from a tour in Germany.

There was also a P-38 aircraft in WW2. Apparently the designation P-38 is popular with the Military.

Same for the Air Force. We had C rations for 3 days during tech school and that was it.

My Swiss Army knife has an attachment designed like the P-38. It's the only can opener I need. Since most cans are pull tops now it doesn't get used much. But it's the best can opener I ever had as far as durability goes. All the others I have had, either electric or manual, have worn out far too soon. It also has a corkscrew for those very rare times that I drink wine and a bottle opener that also seldon gets used are most bottles are twist off these days.

A local gun shop sold the P38's. I bought several of them, cheap. Never have used them but they are my Plan B.

I can’t find a P-38 Ruger. I did find a German made Walter P-38. Something tells me Walther may have taken over making the Ruger during WWII. I have a Ruger .22 magnum pistol in my collection. The P-38 shot a 9mm. Parabellum cartridge.

I've got two and both are VN bring backs.....one has been on my key chain for over fifty years and the other one is around here someplace still in the original wrapper.

Got P38s from Korean War era rations on the fire line. By the time I was done MREs - "Meals Rejected by Ethiopia" - were available.

I have a .380 Ruger pocket pistol. Sometimes, I forget I have it in my pocket. I have carried it into church a few times.
