Pandemic Predicted On Shark Tank

Watching a Shark Tank rerun a couple days ago there was a young man pitching a DNA research business. When asked why this type of business he replied, "There is a pandemic coming." None of the sharks argued that point. I don't know the year this show aired but the young man was right.

I started reading science fiction in the mid 1960s, and even back then they were writing stories about how if a pandemic, wouldn't even have to be anywhere near as bad as the Black Plague, but even just about like the Spanish Flu, got going again and with modern air travel? Look out! And the consensus seemed to be that it wasn't a matter of "if" but of "when." (Keep Humanity strong: read science fiction!)

The likelihood of an eventual pandemic has been one of those inconvenient truths that humanity had chosen to put on the back burner. We chose to regard even the possibility remotely through medical science fiction thrillers such as "Contagion" and "The Andromeda Strain." Horrible contagious diseases such as Ebola didn't much alarm the west as long as they were confined to Africa. We ignored history as "the long ago." Then life imitated literary art, and history became relevant very quickly as we entered a new chapter...
