Parasite Is Hiding in Salad Mixes Across 8 States

206 people have already tested positive

Salad lovers, watch out: The FDA and the CDC are warning about an outbreak linked to certain salads sold at Jewel-Osco, Hy-Vee, and Walmart stores, USA Today reports. Long story short, the stores are recalling garden-salad mixes made by a Fresh Express facility in Streamwood, Illinois, and other brands may also be affected. Seems the salads contain a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, bloating, weight loss, stomach cramps, gas, and loss of appetite.

We would Never buy any packets of these "pre-cut" salads sold at the grocery stores. Who knows how these salad packs are prepared, and how well the ingredients were cleaned before packaging??? We regularly eat salads, but carefully rinse the lettuce, etc., before consuming. It's not unusual to hear of a recall of these "convenient" salads.

I'm so glad we get our veggies from my garden. We've been having leaf lettuce which I wash and put in my salad spinner. Once summer is over so are our salad days. I use frozen or canned vegetables for the rest of the year.
By the time spring comes we enjoy the fresh salads even more after not having them for awhile.
I don't trust much of anything from the store these days and try to wash everything carefully.
I spray my bananas and melons with a weak solution of bleach and water then rinse.

No, even I know that's to keep it fresh. The stuff I get is washed before it's put in the package. What's your idea of washing it..with clorox?
I don't use Clorox on anything except the outer skins or peels that aren't eaten.
I use it on bananas because as you peel it down to eat you are touching the outer part and possibly the eatable part as well.
Melons are the same way. You may hold a wedge of melon in your hand while eating and contaminate the fruit at the same time.
The other veggies get a good wash with plain water and a spin in my salad spinner. I see so many of them in the thrift shops. I often wonder why. I use to hate washing and drying leaf lettuce and other greens. I can even double wash if needed. Great for parsley that I freeze for the winter.

I do have to note an exception to not eating lettuce....Costco's chicken Caesar salad is so good that I occasionally buy that. Best cherry tomatoes and Caesar dressing I've tasted. They use romaine and I inspect it thoroughly before eating.

When will we learn not to buy bagged salads and spinach????

As for thick skinned produce @Ruth n Jersey, I read that bananas, melons, avocados, need not be washed nor bought as "organic". I hope that's right, but it makes sense.

To tell the truth, when I see something labled "Organic" (with the higher price), I honestly don't even believe it.

I am always leery about organic labelled produce.
