So I was visiting my elderly mother at the Hospital. I parked at 2hrs free parking and was 20 minutes late getting back to my car because Mom was in pain and couldn't get to sleep tonight.

Bam! A parking ticket for $105.00. Thank you so much!

What a nice kick in the teeth after spending time with an ill loved one.

Beezer where do you live ? That's a scandalous fine.. Today I read about a woman who went to McDonald and overtstayed by 15 minutes.. got a fine for £185 ..of course it's the parking companies and not McDonalds but even so... it's a lot of money

Here there's no free parking at our hospitals , it starts at around £3.50 per hour...

Our hospitals typically have large parking lots. Some are free, others charge based on how long you park there.
Ours are licensed to legally rob. People who are on long term cancer treatments have to find the money to park whether they can afford it or not. Even during the Pandemic, nurses were being charged to park in the hospital car park!!

There's a long road by a soccer field near the Hospital where you can park for free for 2 hours. Yes, I was 20 minutes over, but still it's Saturday night and nobody is around. Who was I inconveniencing??

My City is so hard up for money they've resorted to ticketing people who are visiting sick and dying loved ones. I'm tempted to write a scathing letter to my city newspaper about this.

same thing happens here.. overstay and they jump on you from a high height.. despicable!

I know hospitals and shops aren't the same thing of course.. but at Christmas time, it was 5pm in the afternoon.. pitch dark and lashing down of rain. I drove into the car park of a store I was visiting for the first time , there was no lights, and the rain was sheeting down. The car park was empty except for one or 2 vehicles, and I gave a cursory glance and couldn't see any payment machines , so I dashed into the store got what I went for a dashed back . 2 weeks later I got an £85 fine for not paying the car park charge.. I'd only been parked for 15 minutes.

a few weeks later I returned to the store in the daytime to look for the pay machines.. and again couldn't see any... lo and behold there was a single ancient machine INSIDE the store, on the landing of the back stairs... no sign to say it was there either.. I was furious!!

Obviously I don't know where you are, but check the policies or laws regarding time of parking. Vancouver WA and Portland OR both have free city street parking from 7 pm to 8 am. And free Sunday (in some areas)

The way I'm seeing it, I have 4 options.

1) Go to my local City Hall and beef the ticket. They'll probably meet me half way and only charge me 50 bucks.

2) Go to trial in front of a Judge to explain myself...guilty with a reasonable excuse, etc.

3) Start a Go fund Me Campaign to pay for the parking infraction. Any amount above the $105.00 would go to charity.

4) Write a scathing letter to the Editor of my main City newspaper.

I'm leaning towards #1...to discuss this at City Hall....diplomatically of course even though I am still enraged.

If you decide to fight the ticket, does the person who issued the ticket have to show up. Often people fight a ticket knowing that the issuer likely won’t show up. If it wouldn’t cause the fine to be higher, I might try this just because yours was a simple lapse in time for a valid reason.

What state?

Fortunately in Scotland, hospital parking is free and at our nearest large hospital, a charitable foundation paid for a modern multi storey car park - just across from the main entrance. There are also a number of bus services that stop at the hospital.
Parking, where it is charged, is usually about £1 / hour, but there are a number of thieving scumbag parking companies around waiting to steal your cash.

Private or public hospital?
Does the Hospital run the car park or an outside business?
This stuff is going on everywhere.
Remember, it is the Governments that allow this to happen.
Permission is asked of Governments and most times they allow the exploitation of the public.
A supermarket here underwent a massive redevelopment, then they put gates on the car parks and started charging customers.

If you get no satisfaction write to your local Member of Parliament, plus the opposition Member, plus you local tv channel and your local paper.

That's more than they charge to park on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and believe me, parking in Chicago is in no way cheap, but take away the violence and it's a great city to be out at nights "downtown."

Maybe you could take the ticket into the parking office or whoever attends to these issues and contest it? I wouldn't let it slide under the circumstances. Sometimes we have to stand up for ourselves and ask them to put theirself into your shoes, what would they have done, walked out of the room and say "Sorry Mom, I have to get to my car before they ticket it? I hope you're feeling better soon.”

If I remember right, my last parking ticket cost $2, but that was a long time ago. Maybe in urban areas, where parking is in short supply, people might park their cars in a Hospital parking lot taking up much needed space for patients. Personally, I have never run into a medical facility that charged for parking. But this maybe a glimpse of what is to come.

Who issued the ticket, municipal police or hospital police?

unfortunately your free car parking is what causes ours to be so high because we subsidise yours as we do everywhere in the UK.. Not saying you shouldn't have it, but it's so unfair that we have to pay it in England for everybody else..

Hollydolly, I lived in England for many years, so I know the score there and I agree, you should have the same benefits. Fortunately I didn't have to make use of the NHS hospital as we had private health cover through work with BUPA. My children were born at home, so we save a few bob there :ROFLMAO:

I've just been checking up with Aberdeen city centre parking and it's just over £1 / hour and £6 a day. For evening shows etc.. it's only £1 for the whole evening (6pm - 4 am). Not bad for a city centre.
