Paul Newman quote about the old days

I read this in Newsweek in 2008 (just found the article again this morning). I had been trying to find this quote for years because I love it so much. It stuck in my head for years, especially the part about "grace". I so agree with him. Here it is:

"What's difficult about getting old," he said, with that gravelly voice that set in in his 60s, "is remembering the way things used to be. There were such things as loyalty. The community hadn't disintegrated. The individual had not been deified at the expense of everything around him. I don't think that's just an old codger, you know, wishing for the old days. Goddam, they were better. There was a lot of ugliness, but there was a lot more grace." - Paul Newman

All of Newman's spaghetti sauce profits went to charity.

He talked about being lucky for being born with good bone structure. He also said he couldn't watch his older films...he'd cringe at his own acting skills.

Thanks for that great quote, Amelia B. He always struck me as a very humble and thoughtful individual, despite all of his fame and wealth.

Yes, Good quote. Paul Newman looked IDENTICAL to my great Grandfather!
The spittin image!
Paul Newman was my "crush" in high school.

But, I read what he wrote in his book and AARP magazine about his affair
while he was married and had a child and my feelings were,
"Wow, He's just like every other cheating, lying, (Well, YOU finish the sentence!)
After I read that, I lost respect for him. He didn't cheat from time to time,
It was constantly, everywhere, all the time!
Kinda wish I hadn't read that.

Bob Hope was also the same. Sinatra and many others, Yes, even Trump.

If I wrote down all of my actions, I would look like a crazy, sometimes unlikable, sometimes pathetic, but mostly OK person. I've done things I wish I could go back and change. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God-- especially me LOL. It is difficult to have those we admire show their human failings. It hurts. So I understand your sentiments, Gaer! :)
