Pay Attention to Those Deer Crossing Signs!

I'm not sure but especially the first bunch appeared to be male elk. I am not sure. Up in Idaho in the dead of winter I had a herd of maybe 150 elk run up our road. Quite a site. I am not a hunter.

Yanno, I've always wondered the same thing...why bother putting up the signs when the deer can't read? Same thing with "bear crossing" signs. I have never, ever, not even once, seen deer or bear crossing at the signs. Nope.

Looks like the person who posted the first video here removed it. I remembered this woman who called a radio station with a complaint in North Dakota, and had to add it. :p

Around here it's a very serious problem and the complete fault of humans. Expensive housing complexes generate revenue. The nature reserve is open space that requires maintenance. They have volunteer crews so it's not a huge drain on the county. But they keep chipping away at the edges with more and more building. When you go on the highway you always see a bunch of deer, some alive and some dead. We need the Lorax:(

I saw a herd of deer standing in the middle of the road once when driving in the metro park here. As I approached they parted the way for my car. It was so cool!

When deer learn to read, I'll pay attention to them. Deer are walking around cars all the time, and they don't move. Deer don't seem to recognize that cars move. I remember when I moved from an urban area to the "woods", my car insurance went up. On Monday, I called and complained about the hike. On Friday, I hit my first deer.

I live about a mile as the crow flies from a major wildlife crossing of a highway. There's a flashing yellow light on the sign warning of it because there are so many deer and elk. There's a 55 mph night speed limit for thirteen miles of highway, but the most crowded is about a two mile stretch.

I've counted over sixty elk at one time on my property, a bull with his harem. I always have many mule deer, does and fawns, throughout the winter. The bucks stay higher up. Antelope frequently run through. They are unbelievably fast.

Antelope can be victims of cars too. Bears are killed as well although not in the same numbers. The human population density where I live is less than 4 per square mile.
