Paying it Backwards in The Tim Horton's Drive Thru

So today in line at the coffee drive thru, the car in front of me paid for my order...two coffees. I figured that was swell and paid for the person's order in the car behind me...5 bucks. I also tipped the clerk a twoonie. Why should he be missing out on the action?

I just wonder how long this lasted in the line-up...how many cars paid it backwards. :)

I have an American friend on my other forum. He swears this would never happen in The States. I dunno. I don't think he's right. Americans can be generous as well.

I was in a long queue at a drive-through this morning, and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn because I was taking too long to place my order. Take the high road, I thought to myself. So when I got to the first window, I paid for her order along with my own.
The cashier must have told her what I'd done because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you," obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness. When I got to the second window, I showed them both receipts and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the line to start all over.

Don't honk your horn at old people.

It was probably a cheerful Federal Employee who bought me the 2 coffees today. The Feds have a holiday today in my country...Truth and Reconciliation Day on behalf of the Indigenous peoples of our land.

What would never happen? Paying it forward?! If that's what your friend meant, he's very wrong and was probably bs'ing you on purpose. It's done all the time. And I've never heard it calling "backward"... just forward. :giggle:

It has been done here in America, and I have actually seen it done while waiting in a grocery line. There was a young mother with two young toddler children who seemed to have had enough of the grocery shopping and the young mother was frazzled quite a bit. She was already having to pay partially with food stamp assistance and the rest with money which she did not seem to have enough. On top of that the cashier seemed to be losing their patience with the young lady as their line was getting longer as they flicked their light for assistance for another lane to open.

The older man standing behind the young lady seeing that the young lady was getting upset calmly stopped her and just said, three words quietly to her. I think only the cashier and the people in the line could hear him. He said, "I Got This." He pulled out his credit card and paid the remaining amount and the young lady thanked him and went on her way. So it does happen here in America and it certainly put a smile on my face.
