Penneys To Close Near 140 Stores & Lay Off Thousands

Penney's used to be a major "anchor store" in many malls, but I never really did like Penney's. I'm reading that Macy's is facing the the same plight and closing up many stores. Aren't most major "better department stores" owned by the same company? It used to be the May company years ago but that was sold to a bigger conglomerate.

It was kind of nice to shop in the malls; we were out of the weather anyway. I only go to a mall once in a great while, now.

You know what I remember about Penny's? I got my first store credit card from there, at about age 21. One of the few things I bought for myself with it was new winter coat. It was a cloth coat, blue. Funny the things you remember, considering that was over 40 years ago.

I remember that Sears and even Pennys had a catalog business that would have been a natural transition to online sales, if only they got the timing right and didn't flush their catalog business. Now online sales is driving them out of business. I didn't foresee the coming of online business but thought flushing those businesses was foolish; I even made a special effort to get the last issue of Sears catalog. Some executives screwed up on that decision.

I'm 71 and disabled. I have trouble walking. I bought 3 sets of bed sheets from Penny's. I bought them on line. They were the same price delivered to me,, as the "in store" ones. I don't have the hassle of walking through a mall, waiting on line to pay, and they delivered free to my doorstep. I feel sorry for the folks, who lost their jobs. Peoples buying habits are changing. The buggy whip makers went out of business.

I don't shop at Penney's often, but I hate to see these stores close down. I buy a few odd things there over the years, including Levi jeans which I wear almost every day. Clothing is something I like to try on in the store and buy, I haven't had good results buying any clothing or shoes online just going by size. You can have two items of the same size that fit you differently. Even though I'm a woman, I don't fit the stereotype. I hate to shop and only go to malls or shopping if I need a specific item, then it's in and out for me.

I still haven't gotten over the demise of Montgomery Ward's. :playful:

Mom always took us to Ward's, Penney's and Sears (separate stores, not in a mall) the same day when buying school clothes, so she could comparison-shop. Lots of memories of sights, sounds, and smells in those stores, and I will be sorry to see them pass into history when they inevitably fall victim to Amazon's amazing business model.

And what kind of world will it be without the Sears catalog??? Heresy!

I remember my mom taking me to Penney's and buying a 3 pack of shirtwaist blouses when school started. You had a choice of all white, or 3 pastel colors. Sure would like to see those come back. I just want something that fits and wears well.

If I go into Penny's or any other mall store looking for clothing, I find everything is styled for people 50 to 60 years younger than me. I buy on line.

I used to have a Ward's by me too that I liked to shop at, always took my mother in law there for her shopping too. We still have a Sears, but they'll probably shut down soon.

I'm still sad about Grants, Woolworths and the five and dime store closing, and that was many moons ago. It's just so easy to order items online anymore. We don't even go to the bank either. Deposit checks and pay bills online. And, of course, pizza delivery right to our front door.

At the places we were stationed overseas (Army), the arrival of the Sears catalogs at our little outposts were much anticipated and welcomed with great excitement. Also the Wards and Penneys catalogs, and another one called Spiegel. I haven't thought about the Spiegel catalog for years -- I wonder if they are still around. Everyone used to order all kinds of stuff from the catalogs, because we had such limited selections of anything at our little PXs.

That's exactly what I have been discussing with several of my friends and they feel the same way! I have purchased more online now than in a store in years and then I'm lucky if it fits!
