People asking for money , but this lady took the cake

I agree, showing the card, as if trying to prove she wasn't lying, is a dead giveaway, and very stupid.

Toomuch, your instincts were right on!

.

Be careful. Criminals are getting bolder and they think seniors are easy targets.

A friend who is a social worker was parked at a busy supermarket in the middle of the afternoon in a "good" part of town. She was a little early for her next appointment, so she was just sitting in her car with the window rolled down.. Suddenly a guy reached in to grab her purse, dragging her half way out the car window and hurting her arm in the process.

Several years ago in the Dallas area there was a rash of home invasions that targeted seniors at supermarkets. If the senior was wearing a lot of jewelry or appeared to have a lot of cash, the criminal would follow her home to rob her. One elderly woman was murdered during the home invasion.

There might not have even been any grandchildren. That may sound cold, but it's odd that she was so....prepared with a story and cards addressed to the kids. In a parking lot.

About 12 yrs ago I became aware that a young lady who was doing temp work in our office was on the verge of getting her electric turned off for non-payment. It was close to Christmas and she had a child. Suffice to say I obtained enough information about her (address, etc.) that allowed me to contact the electric company, pay the bill electronically, and she never knew I was her benefactor. (It was a gift. I didn't want her to be embarrassed or feel she needed to pay me back.)

Well done ! You were like the original St Nicholas... doing good deeds anonymously.

I'm sure you were blessed many times over :)

I'm used to people asking for spare change , but this lady had GUTS ! She met me by my car in Walmart's parking lot. She was about my age (I think Mexican ,some words were hard to understand ) and .........get this .......... she wanted me to take her in the store and buy her 3 gifts for her grandkids ! She showed me "the card" she had for them , but she didn't have gifts. She was babbling about the church not helping her , God , believing in miracles Blah blah blah. This had to be a scam, even though a little voice in my head keeps saying , what if it's true ? I'll admit, I do give change to people who ask ,but this lady took the cake ! It had to be a scam, don't ya think ?

I've given to panhandlers in the street when I felt they were sincere and I had the money to spare. But this does sound pretty aggressive to me, not just wanting whatever you can spare so she could gather her money and buy some holiday gifts, but actually wanting you to go into the store with her for not one even, but three gifts. I would have told her to take a hike, people like her ruin it for others who are sincerely down on their luck in my opinion.

Coincidentally I heard the tail end of a story on the news tonight. An elderly woman got scammed out of $30,000 by someone who had "befriended" her then disappeared. Don't know the details but something was said about her daughter in another state having an atty take over the woman's finances.

I never give money to people. My only charities are groups that help animals.

Dave Foreman was right when he said, "Man is the cancer of the planet."

A scammer I saw on TV years ago, have seen many others too. I still give, but it has to feel right, too many out there trying to just make money at the expense of kind-hearted people.
