People who grew up poor but are now financially comfortable

I have to say this about being poor…it gave me great survival skills. I do not regret any of it.

I agree that having been poor does impart both useful skills and perspective. I don't regret it either. However I am glad to have had that experiance IN THE PAST. I would not want to repeat it. The same goes for my time in the military. Glad to have had the experiance but would not want to go back to it.

@Trade ….totally agree with you. I sometimes feel like Scarlet O’Hara when she says “I will never be hungry again”. I know enough now that I look both ways before attempting to cross a road. I sit very comfortable now …and intend to keep it that way.

You know, it's funny. My wife asked me once, "Why do you always have to have the cupboards and fridge and freezer full all the time?"

Without even thinking about what I was going to say, I just blurted out, "Because they were always empty when I was growing up."

How has growing up poor affected me?

I never, ever, forced my kids to eat something they didn't like. They had choices.

It took me years to realize I could afford new things whenever I wanted.

When I retired from the state 13 years ago, we had people that were on SSI, which is a disability program where they don’t have enough credits to obtain SSDI. SSI is often for poor people that are also disabled. Some of them were only receiving $500-600/ per month. I know people on regular Social Security that only receive 1000 a month now. Are you saying @hollydolly that that’s much more than what they would get in the UK?
not 600.... but certainly there are many people living on a State pension of only 800.00...in fact I know of one on just £750

...but I wasn't talking about disabled people on the youtube videos, they were normal people, no disabiliies , and said they were liviing in their vehicles because they couldn't afford to live anywhere else, and some of them were getting $4k a mnth.. the average were getting $2500

! I do love me some ribeyes. And I can afford it. But I just can't bring myself to pay that much.
Me too!

I always wait until I can snag a couple with a yellow manager’s markdown sticker.

When I get them home I cut them in half and freeze each piece.

You can also cut the steak into it’s natural sections and use the cap and tail for kebabs or a quick stir fry.
