Judging from many of your responses, I would say that the Second Amendment should be reworded to say:

"The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed, but not recommended."

IMO the second amendment has served us well and is fine as it is.

“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

For me it depends on why a person feels the need to have a gun and what they expect from that gun.

At this point in my life, I have no need/reason to own a gun.

Lets face it...those who would prefer not to have a loaded gun in the house are simply afraid of guns!

I have to laugh at those who keep their ammunition in a seperate location from their piece.

When a robber is breaking into their home, I guess they should tell him: "Wait a minute please...I have to get my ammo and load my gun!"

Hmmm. Speaking as a Canadian, I beg to differ. Different cultures produce different situations/attitudes. I think it is arbitrary to expect everyone to embrace the necessity of being armed. I am not afraid of guns in the least, where I live, such protection is simply unnecessary.

Agree with Shalimar. And the reason the ammunition is in another place (for me) is simply because it was inherited along with the guns. I tend to accumulate clutter as long as it doesn't take up much space.

I have a stun gun and pepper spray and would like to own a gun. Any ideas for a lady living alone? I don't know what to buy. I would keep it here in the condo and really not tell anyone about it.

Take a gun/firearm safety class. If the training doesn't include enough shooting at a range to allow you to choose, go to a shooting range and rent multiple guns.
Once you have a gun, take a self-defense class where you shoot your gun.

Comparing the environment in Canada with that in the urban areas in the U.S. is really an Apples and Oranges thing. Canada is a stable and mostly honest society, whereas there are literally millions of thugs roaming the streets in the U.S. The crime in our cities is one of the bigger reasons we retired to a rural area. Out here, many people don't even bother locking their doors....but in the city, some people can't even sit on their front porch in the evening without running the risk of being targeted.
