Some people have told me that with certain tests, especially the multiple-choice Myers & Briggs MBTI personality test, it's best to answer with the first response that comes to mind. However, I completely disagree with this approach.
Many of us are constrained by our environment and conform to certain expectations, particularly in the workplace. For instance, you may be required to perform a task in a specific manner because that's what your line management and company want. In this situation, you might answer a MBTI personality test based on your willingness to comply with the company's way of doing things, as the company's authority has convinced you that it is the correct way to think and act.
When I take the MBIT test, I dig deeper into myself and consider what my authentic thoughts are when all constraints are removed. I reflect on how I truly perceive and think about things without any significant external influences.
Later, I was told that the thinking process I described above is characteristic of a genuine INTP. However, it's important to keep in mind that MBTI has 16 base categories, and there is a vast variation of individuals within each category.
I’m an INTP-A, & here are my traits that I recognise:
- Introspective, tend to spend a lot of time thinking deeply about things and reflecting on my own thoughts and experiences.
- Analytical, dead right I am. Engage in logical analysis. An ability to see the big picture but can focus in on the minute, as even the smallest thing can affect to big picture. Occasionally delve to deep & can become lost in my own mind, if I’m not carful. “analysis paralysis”?
- Can be quite creative and come up with novel solutions to problems.
- Independent thinking. Motivated by my own personal goals and interests. Can be difficult at times for me to get motivated with somethings my employer gives me. To the point where I don’t even hand the work in, or its late. Don’t give me deadlines. However, there are somethings my employer gives to me that causes them to ask how the hell did I do that so quickly.
- Open-minded with a broad range of interests and are curious about the world around me, & the people within it.
- Assertive, especially in the face of fierce opposition. But not all the time, it can depend on how bored I get with a situation or person.
- Have little respect for a person in authority -- authority for its own sake. I’m not generally interested in someone’s position, thair education. Show me what you are made of instead.
- Can become disconnected from the people around me.
- Well, there’s a start of my thoughts anyway.
