Pessimism May Be Bad for Your Heart

No doubt about it, and I believe it impacts other aspects of physical health too. It's also stressful to be around a pessimistic person too, so impacts other people. We have one life and a choice how to shape our attitude. It seems every time I feel a little sorry for myself or lazy, I run into in real life situation or a story will pop up in the news about a disabled child with a great attitude or an 80 year old who walks five miles a day. Attitude reset slap upside the head every time!

We can't always be cheery or deny sadness when it hits us hard but it's certainly a choice to be miserable and live constantly in a negative state of mind. It's also a choice to try and find the positives in life and be greatful for all the things we've been given. This doesn't mean walking around with a big smile and always faking being so darn happy--but always whining about something can really snowball and have a negative impact on our lives and health. I guess what I am trying to say is there is a time for sadness and there are times to be happy--I think this is normal. It is not good for us to always be miserable and even worse, to spew this unhappiness on those around us. I really hate to hear about people dumping their problems on their children and trying to pull them down the swirling drain. So unfair. If anything in life irritates me--it is that. Family members often feel "trapped" and obligated to listen. I know a grown married woman who for the past twenty plus years has listened to her mother complain about her father. Now I would listen to this for a while but then had to say, well, if she is so unhappy, file for divorce and move on. What else can you say?

Well said Bluebreezes, completely agree. I've been around a few negative nellies in the past, always looking at the dark side of things. I definitely affects your own mood, it drains your energy to be around them, puts a damper on your good (or average) mood. Of course we're all sad or angry for various reasons during our life, but it's short term, not like being pessimistic day in and day out.

Wow. She sounds very sharp and aware. People are living longer these days. I'm sure a large part of that is genetic but there's also a lot to be said about a positive attitude and I think she is a great example of that.
