Petroleum infuses a multitude of everyday items the Iran war could make more expensive

It might be hard to imagine the Iran war weighing on stuffed toys with names like Snuggle Glove, Bizzikins and Wobblies, but even plush playthings are not immune when oil shipments from the Middle East are constrained.

Like many soft toys, the creatures developed by a manufacturer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, are made with polyester and acrylic, synthetic fibers derived from petroleum. Three weeks after the war started, suppliers in China notified Aleni Brands that getting the materials already was costing them 10% to 15% more, CEO Ricardo Venegas said.

“I think this situation demonstrates how much oil permeates throughout our system, and we can’t get away from it,” said Venegas, who founded Aleni Brands last year and is in the process of adding product lines. “Who would have thought that the price of a toy would have a direct relationship with oil?”

It's not just toys. Petrochemicals derived from oil and natural gas go into making more than 6,000 consumer products, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Computer keyboards, lipstick, tennis rackets, pajamas, soft contact lenses, detergent, chewing gum, shoes, crayons, shaving cream, pillows, aspirin, dentures, tape, umbrellas and nylon guitar strings are just a few of them.

Yeah, it was ...interesting seeing the irony in protestors showing up with Stop Oil! written on polyethylene sign-boards, wearing their petroleum-product sneakers, rain jackets and ponchos, sunglasses, etc., taping and gluing themselves to things, recording stuff on their cellphones, and I could go on.

I know it isn't common knowledge that so many mundane items contain petroleum or its byproducts, but it's incredibly easy to look that up. Plus it immediately blew up on social media.

Back to glass jars for everything? Guess I better pick up a few more glass storage bowls for freezer.
Freezer bags may get expensive. Ohhh, that means glass shampoo bottles too! Ok I am saving one as
I drop mine a lot in the shower.
Really, think about it, it's daunting! Life without Cling wrap? Is that possible?

I found out a few months ago that petroleum is in red food dye, thus in Starburst strawberry water enhancer, my favorite. That was a turn off for me, so I stopped buying it. A couple of decades ago, I stopped buying skin products that have petroleum in them. We'll have to see how pricing on the products you mentioned are affected. I doubt that the prices will come down once they've increased.

@IrishEyes Being a clumsy person, I'm very intimidated by glass. I have glass containers here that can be used for baking and storing. They even have tops, but I usually wind up using plastic ones to store and freeze leftovers. I just got a new water filtering pitcher because of its extra features. It is glass, but has silicone covering its base. That makes me feel a bit better. I can't tell you how many times I've bumped my Brita pitcher against the sink and thank goodness it never cracked.

Ladies, you could be glad that you don't have to wear your terrible bras anymore :ROFLMAO: . Elastane (Spandex) is oil-based as many other synthetic fibers.
