Philosophy by which you live

On Happiness
1. The universe is pervaded by nature, subject to its indisputable control.
2. It is impossible to enjoy anything not given us by nature.
3. Renounce, do not desire, anything not given us by nature.
4. It follows that we do not covet the possessions or privileges of others. --Inspired by Gandhi who previously had difficulties justifying untouchables

When I turned 21 my wise Grandpa heard me talking about going out with friends. He figured this meant a bar so he softly said
out of the blue
If you want a peach, don't go to a lemon tree.
It took me a minute and I realized he meant, if you want a decent man don't look for him in a bar.
He always made me think for myself, never TOLD me what to do.

On Charlie's Philosophy
RIP, Charlie. I would have loved to have asked you:
"What if God died?"
I can imagine what you might have replied.
Charlie: "God can never die. But as a hypothetical, if he did: Everything, the universe, all of us, would die with him because he IS the universe. He is everything. What do you think would happen if God died?"
Me: "I'm an agnostic. But I was raised in the church and lost my faith --if I ever had it. Historically my ancestors were Christians. Therefore, unless I choose to betray my family, I am technically and practically a Christian. I sincerely practice the teachings of the church, such as the ten commandments, a spiritual respect for life and tradition, and so forth.
"But, for me, God is dead. I think there are many like me. Do you "shake the dust off your feet", abandon us as the New Testament instructs when we're doing our best but have not been given the gift of faith? Will you pray for us? And give me a hat?"
Charlie: "Yes. We've not much choice but to leave you in peace. I don't think you can be called a Christian. You've certainly had plenty of opportunity to find your faith. But if the devil seems to have claimed you, remember it's not over till the fat lady sings. Seek and ye shall find. I'll pray that you find.
"Joe, hand the lady a hat --women can't catch. Next question please."
Me: "In my defense, in the bosom of my family, and as a sincere follower and believer of the tenets of Christianity, I believe I AM a Christian. Thanks, Charlie!
He would have smiled kindly.
