Scammers place phony but authentic-appearing parking tickets on vehicles. Those tickets then direct victims to authentic-looking payment websites and sometimes contain QR code to for people to pay that way.
Not only do they get the victims' money, they now have their checking account or debit/credit card information.
While this scam apparently started in California a couple of years ago, it's now spread nationwide.
Best advice I've found is to go on the local government's official website — not the site listed on the ticket and definitely not the QR code — to verify the ticket is legitimate before proceeding.
