Photos from Bergen,Norway

narrow house.jpg

A narrow street of wooden houses. Historically, stone, cement etc. was scarce and expensive so only Royalty and the Church were allowed to use them for building. Over the years Bergen has experienced a number of devastating fires, so there are strict fire regulations.

With limited space round the harbour area, houses started to be built on the surrounding hills and islands. These tend to be fashionable areas.

My kids/grandkid going to Norway in the spring. A few other Scandanavian countries as well, I think. Your pics are wonderful, thank you for sharing.

Fancy dressing up....
costume.jpg

Traditional Norwegian costumes. Generally reserved for special occasions like weddings. You just can't buy one as they are all made to order and this can take months so many women would make their own dresses for special events.

One Christmas tradition in Bergen is the gingerbread village. A whole village baked every year from gingerbread and icing. This is just a small 'nibble' of the village.

My paternal grandfather migrated @ 17 to the USA from Bergen. Left his family there, when I was in the USAF stationed in Germany I made a special trip to meet many of my ancestors. Very interesting visits with 2nd & 3rd cousins. He married a Scottish girl from Pedro, Ohio (my grandmother whom was involved or related with either the Hatfields or McCoys). She was a pip.

wetday.jpg

Bergen has a high number of wet days - this was one of them.

Note that this and several other streets are very wide. This was to form 'fire breaks' as there had been several large fires in the mainly wooden buildings.

Never been to Norway, but I have spent some time in Denmark and especially in Sweden. I considered retiring there, but the cost of living was prohibitive.
