Although Fyvie castle is fairly near to where we live, we've only visited it once many years ago. It's a beautiful autumn day here, so we thought we would pay a visit. The castle dates from the 1300's and has been extended by a number of it's owners over the years. It fell into the possession of five successive families – Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Forbes-Leith – each of whom added a new tower to the castle.
In 1855 the castle was bought by the Scottish industrialist Alexander Leith who was then living in the USA, and was by then an extremely wealthy man. He initially only wanted the large estate - he had properties through the world and a large ocean going yacht - but bought the estate and castle for the equivalent of £22 million in today's money.
The property along with one of the UK's most valuable art collections sold to the national trust and is now open to the public to view.
