Picked a Bunch of Garbage of the Street. Fun. :(

Went to feed the cats at my workplace as I do every morning. Noted junk in the street in front of my apartment exit. On returning, I'm thinking "I'm sick of picking up trash." I pick up trash at work in the parking lot. I go inside and can hear the cars hitting the garbage including the round metal thing which turned out to be a pizza pan.

So I go out and pick it all up: The pan, several pieces of pool deck/outdoor shower tiles, pieces of wood. Numerous plastic items that had been run over (picked up all the pieces also, wood, 2 water bottles, two food tins, an American flag (that's rich) a large tote bag from the local hospital (useful at least for picking that crap up) and numerous other small including a small paint something that had been run over and there is blue paint in the street.

Seriously I can't stand garbage on the street and I'm sure many see is also. I don't know if this stuff was purposely dumped or more likely blew out of someone's truck. At least it's in the dumpster.

good for you - when I first starting reading this thread, i though you were 'picking up' as a picker, with the intent of scavenging to resell or repurpose, rather than picking up to tidy-up.

people discard without a thought, what a shame, eh?

That is called "Fly Tipping", dumping rubbish anywhere that they please.

Anybody caught doing it from a car or a van, get the car taken away and
crushed.

Mike.
Agreed! People are jerks. I can't even believe my own work place parking lot sometimes: Plastic smoothie cups, cigarette packages (the cigarettes at out of control) candy wrappers, fast food wrapping/containers, masks. Seriously, there is a trash can by the back door.

Thanks. Oh I know, I watch some of those dumpster diving videos on YouTube. There is one young woman who says she has sold things on Posh Mark she found in a dumpster. :D

But what gets thrown away is maddening.

I have also stopped at the fake ponds at the medical complex down the road from me where geese and ducks hang out to pick up plastic and garbage. Once I had to go home and then go back with a curtain rod to get the plastic bag out of the pond or I wouldn't have been able to reach it. People can think I'm nuts and wonder what I'm doing but at my age, I don't care anymore.

Once while walking along a shoreline with my grandson, I spotted several ducks swimming around a boat pier and was saddened to see that the thinnest of them had its beak caught in one of the 6 holes of a plastic cans holder. I couldn't reach it to remove the plastic so I asked a man, who was in his boat at the pier, if he would. But he said the duck would quickly swim out of his reach, if he tried. I had to leave with the hope the duck didn't starve to death because of that :( junked plastic.

While I was walking my dog yesterday, a woman was picking up trash as she made her way around the park. My neighbor used to do that, too, but he's no longer with us.

I do my best not to produce any unnecessary garbage and recycle. Others take it a step further and clean up after others who don't care about the environment. Kudos to those who go the extra mile to make the world better. (y)

It is disgusting that people do this. Every now an then I will carry a large plastic bag on my walks and pick up crap along the road. For several months a grassy area across from an apartment building was littered with beer bottles that were thrown for a balcony purely for entertainment of the tenants.

But the worst I ever picked up, and I wear gloves, was a dirty diaper that was tossed out of a car window. This was staggering to me.

We live in a fairly pristine forest. There was a family who lived here for a few years, that thought the roadside was their personal trash bin. They were often observed tossing their junk out of the car as they headed for the highway. A couple of us got together and picked it all up, then one night we deposited it in their driveway. That seemed to give them the hint, and that stupidity stopped....they finally moved out and some nicer neighbors moved in.

Thank you Don for doing that! I'm glad they moved. They sound like trash. Pun intended.

When I owned a house in another town in this county, I used to see a man walking and picking up trash. He was easy to spot with his hat and some large feathers in it. Likely picked up on his walks. Bless that man for doing that if he's still around.

Thank you also for picking up trash. Even in the neighborhood past my apartment complex considered a very "desirable area" there are cans, bottles and smoothie cups to be seen here and there. So desirable. Proves people can have nice houses but stupid brains.

You were very brave on that diaper. I had gloves on to pick up that trash this morning.

I live in a nice area.. but we get people coming out from the city at the weekends and holidays and they dump their rubbish out of their vehicles, it's very frustrating.. they clearly live like that at home, and it's annoying that they bring that mindset out here..

However overall the UK is very good at keeping Britain Tidy.. especially outside of the cities...

Further to that we have kerbside cleaners ( road sweepers) .. ( trucks who brush and clean the roads at the edges of the kerb once a month)

We also have an army of volunteers who pick up litter...

It's everywhere. Every spring, volunteers form groups and take a section of highway and pick up what was thrown out of car windows in the winter. The following year it's the same thing. When I go fishing from shore, bait and beverage containers are left behind. If you can carry it in full you should be able to carry it out empty.

I managed a restaurant for a few years and one evening I found trash bags in our dumpster that my crew didn't put there, so I started looking through it for mail or anything with an address. Found the same address in all 3 bags. The city charged a $500 fine for dumping personal trash in business dumpsters. I could have reported these people but I left their trash on their driveway with a note saying "I just saved you $1500 in fines. Next time it's on you." They stopped using our dumpster but they probably used someone else's. It's not really a big deal until people start dumping old mattresses and furniture in your bin, so I think I did the right thing.

The US signs saying “This section of highway adopted by ….” always have impressed me.
I like that too. I don't know if they still do this, but it used to be that the county jail would bus inmates to those roads to pick up the trash and they got paid out of the adoption fees.

Back in the late 80s, the county where I lived in had program - able-bodied welfare recipients cleaned the highways in exchange for their welfare benefits, and they also gave them work-experience credits that they could put on job applications.

Did you have a good harvest?
Well it's all in the dumpster. I'm glad to exit my apartment lot and not see that stuff. For all I know, had I not picked it up, it could still be there.

@Mike That guy was tough. I like how he picked up the trash and then threw the real trash out of the car. The guy was too stupid to get it.

@hollydolly There is some kind of cleanup people in my area. I have noted posts online with people saying why bother. The homeless situation is bad and the gulch behind my workplace has encampments and they just leave trash and all kinds of stuff. There was supposed to be people payed by the city to pick up and they were supposed to get the gulch but so far, nothing.

I've also had 3 dishes for the cats go missing lately. I didn't have trouble before but we think it's the homeless. I have to go to the thrift store for more spare dishes.

When we lived in Niagara Falls, I used to take a plastic bag with me whenever I walked our dog. In a park adjacent to our block of houses, people used to throw (and break) glass bottles. One time, the dog cut his paw on the glass

I am proud to say that Toronto is very clean, though there is debris in certain areas. On Earth Day, citizens get out there to clean it all up.
