Picnics, Potlucks, do you have a favorite dish or item you enjoy bringing?

Whether it's a picnic or an indoor affair, I usually take a chocolate cake or a pecan pie. I find it easier to manage something that doesn't have to be kept warm, or refrigerated. The trouble with that is, sometimes there can be too many sweets, since apparently other people feel the same. So, whenever possible, I find out if there's a sign up list to avoid duplications.

@MACKTEXAS, I agree with you about an abundance of desserts. I like to ask if they know what is needed. Even if there is no sign up list, they may have a good idea of what the others usually bring & can give a suggestion.

If I do bring desserts, I make pies in my cupcake pans which are usually key lime, lemon or pecan tassies. That way there is no cutting needed. Works out well if there are kids who have a tendency to cut a big piece taking one bite & waste the rest.

For sides I try to do something that doesn't need to be kept cold. I'll do baked beans, pesto green bean potato salad, German potato salad or an old family recipe that's a potato salad made with a creamy boiled dressing with bacon as it's base.

Whatever I take is put in a disposable dish/pan with throw away utensils so I don't have to worry about getting them back.
