Pictures From My Smart Bird Feeder

Gorgeous pictures as always Medusa.
Are the squirrels and starlings put off by the new food? I hope so. The new food looks like a mixture of seeds. That female cardinal is so stunning.

Do you think they like like the new seed as much as they like the other seed?
That last picture is adorable.
Thank you, Patty. 🤗 I had to put up another post with the correct feeding picture because I realized I'd posted the one from the other day, mistakenly.

I think they are getting used to the new seed, but alas, it is a bit too expensive. I didn't realize that it was only a 5lb bag instead of 10lb for nearly the same price. So we'll have to shop around again.

She is pretty, isn't she? I think she's prettier than her mate right now.

Oh that IS expensive. A 5 lb bag will be gone in no time. It pays to shop around. We used to get a big bag of mixed seed along with a 25 lb. bag of shelled sunflower seeds. We used those feeders that have individual stands for each bird . Most birds would just eat a seed at a time but every once in a while we’d get a lazy eater who didn’t want to crack the seeds so would ditch all the shelled seeds looking for a seed without the shell and there wasn’t many. Luckily we had a lot of ground feeders who would find the otherwise, wasted seed .
My husband said I can’t police the birdies and I said “ watch me.” lol 😂

LOL! I'm like that too! My husband wants to let the starlings be and I want them out! We used to have a different type of feeder and some birds with the same kind of behavior you're describing, sort of digging through the seed looking for the best pieces. Sheesh. 😅

All those photos are fascinating....

And one of them shows very well, how the wing feathers of one wing,
are composed of a set that curves upward, and a lower set that curves downward.
Great to actually see that, on a live wild bird!
It is so cool to see! I was noticing too the downy feathers under the wings. I'm assuming for winter warmth?

The cardinals have the special, wondrous eating technique, wherein they pick up the black oiled sunflower seed,

And (one at a time) they roll it around in their mouth, then drop the shell out.

Then they grab the next seed, and repeat.

It's amazing to watch them shell the seeds, and swallow the inside;

but could it possibly appear that they're rejecting seeds they don't like???

I'm not sure, actually. But it does look like, or it did, with the sunflower seeds, that they were peeling the skin off before eating them. It's fun to watch, I agree. :)

Are the birds not taking to the new safflower seeds?
They seemed to like the safflower pretty well, I think and after a few days, I wasn't seeing any starlings or squirrels. For whatever reason though, my husband decided to buy more of the hot sunflower. Anyway, pictures have been a bit scarce lately because of my being more focused on poor unwell husband and also just not as "into" the bird feeder. (I feel bad writing that.)

I do have a couple pictures from the last few days, though. You're so nice to ask, Patty. 🤗

Lady Cardinal looking very colorful and pretty. I haven't seen Mr. Cardinal in several days now, though I'm sure he's been around.

This really isn't a feeder for big birds. :/

I think it's cute the way she turns her head to pick out her seeds.

I thought that the lack of pictures might be due to your husband being sick. That makes sense. I hope you didn’t feel pressured to post pictures but I’m so grateful that you did. I was really missing out on seeing them.

Oh goodie. I knew there must still be be some pictures you have there. Thanks for showing them Medusa. I got my birdie fill in today.

Lady cardinal sure IS looking as pretty as ever. She really IS a beautiful bird. You got a great photo there with the dark green bush behind her.

What’s that white container on the right hand side opposite the suet? Is that water?
This really isn't a feeder for big birds. :/

lol! It IS now. At least you don’t have a whole flock of the them. It looks like she’s basting in the sunlight.

Yes, that's supposed to be water, but it's been frozen over. :/

Thank you for this really lovely response.

I love your pictures. Thank you. Don't let it become a chore. Take a break. What a great shot of Lady Cardinal. The male might be observing from a distance.
