Piercings in Our Golden Years?

Okay first off I am the last person to judge whatever makes one happy. As you know I have any number of tattoos and a subtle lavender streak in my auburn tresses. But there was a gentleman today, dead ringer for the Beach Boys Brian Wilson. Maybe 60 looking at 70 with a lip ring and eyebrow piercing.

Really I wish we could have chatted in depth there. My body ink is on places that are still non-wrinkled and toned. But this fellow look weathered and still looked like Brian Wilson. I really would have liked to find out why. My ink is to make me feel badass enough to do all I have to do. Plus it's one of a kind artwork. I really wonder his story. Maybe I'll ask if I see him again.

Can't do that piercing thing. Tats yes, but I don't need any additional holes in this 70 year old body.

But best buddy was telling me the other night...piercing needles are way big...gads...he had a belly piercing that was toned and way cool but infection there is no fun. The pictures in the studio book were places that just unless you were Marilyn Chamber's back in the day. Pierce THAT? No I don't think so...

Thanks, but no piercings for this old guy. I've got plenty of places where this body has already been "pierced" due to broken bones and other assorted surgeries... all relatively minor. Ain't got no hankering for putting more holes in and carrying around more metal. Hard enough to get through an airport with this titanium knee!!!! :>)

Piercings and tattoos are completely the choice of the "wearer". I will never take issue with someone who wants to have ink or piercings. It's just not for me.

What I do have some issue with is when folks who need assistance feeding/clothing their families will, instead, spend the money on ink or piercings. A couple years ago, I had a young lady in front of me in the grocery store checkout who was using "food stamps" to pay for her groceries. She had a very small tot in the cart. Her arms and neck were covered with ink. That made my blood boil. If I am going to assist with her basic needs... and her child's... with assistance dollars, why didn't she use the dollars spent on ink for those basics? Now, she may well have had the ink before falling on hard times. Not knowing the complete story, was not mine to make one up in my mind.

The other thing that I have some trouble with is the number of college athletes who have scads of ink adorning their bodies. Tattoos are NOT cheap. Yet, most of these players are attending college on full-ride scholarships. If "free" education is awarded to some, then doesn't that drive up the education for others... and drive up the taxpayer dollars that support universities? Why, if attending on other people's money should they toss that in our face by displaying hundreds of dollars in ink?

Sorry! Sort of digressed off the OP's post. Again, if a person wants to have piercings or tattoos, that is totally and completely their choice... even if "old and wrinkled"!! :>)

I do enough "body piercing" through clumsiness with knives in the kitchen and screw drivers in the garage. I don't have to pay someone to pierce me.

I've just never found piercings attractive, except for pierced ears for earrings. What's up with those people I see with great big plug-type things in their earlobes?? That's hideous.

This is the daith piercing.
If you havnt heard, this is also known as the migraine headache killer.
This pierced through a special pressure point alleviating migraines.

Recently, some people who have received a Daith piercing have coincidentally found improvement with their migraine headaches. It is not universal, and it is has not been studied formally. The correlation is based on the success for some people with acupuncture in the same region of the Daith piercing.

AND, what a lot of people don't realize when they get tats everywhere, it is DOES make it harder to find a job, right or wrong, but it's true, especially in professions and professional offices. If people are going to get tats, they need to keep them where they can be covered by normal business dress.

My younger son told me that there are people who take it up a notch, pun intended, and gauge their cheeks too. A thought that makes me a bit ill. They expand the disks until you can see their teeth in their face. There has to be a medication for that I don't know.

What I do have some issue with is when folks who need assistance feeding/clothing their families will, instead, spend the money on ink or piercings.

I would agree in some situations. I mean if you're under the poverty level and collecting government assistance...affording $200 sneakers and full sleeve tattoos from your ahem " side business" is fricking irresponsible. Smaller pieces aren't terribly expensive though. It's like instead of buying myself a moderately priced hand bag I got a dog inked on my arm instead. The art will outlast any purse or pair of shoes.

I think that's young people thinking especially. There are so many music personalities doing the neck tattoo thing. But in the real world creative body modifications will cost you many interviews. Safer not to do necks, hands, and never your face...Little Wayne will never be working for big corporate...keep that in mind. Not to mention if you have so much body art you have to do your eye lids too? It might be time to stop and get a life.

BTW, I wouldn't do it but those heart earring are actually very pretty:)

That cheek thing is really, really, disgusting and gross. How do they keep their coffee from leaking out the side of their head?

I had to giggle...isn't that really a horrible idea? Then again I remember talking to this one young man a few years ago. He was clean cut and handsome, a young Denzel Washington. He liked my tattoos, he had his shoulder branded. Dear Gawd, so very many ways to hurt yourself:eek:

Oh and for those clueless to Little Wayne? Body art taken to beyond ridiculous...

Ken, do you know anyone personally that had success with this? I had an acupuncture ear piercing when I first started to quit smoking around age 30. My mother in law was seeing an acupuncturist that was giving her pain relief with treatments, and she insisted I try it. Well, I went in with a positive attitude, but the piercing did absolutely nothing to stop the cravings. Quit later on cold turkey, never smoked since.

I don't care what other people choose to do with their bodies. I think it's up to them. Their body- their choice & they are the ones that have to live with it. I have one piercing in each ear which I did myself when I was 13 years old and got in trouble for doing :D I have no tats and no desire to get any. No desire for any more piercings.

I blame this teacher at the summer school. When I was a kid my Dad was an administrator for the district summer school. Daycare was hard to find in those days. He would bring me to work with him. I had coloring books and junk food and was free to hang out in the office or teacher's room. As long as my Dad got his job done I had the afternoon to entertain myself.

There was a teacher who must have been a serviceman. He had an anchor on one arm and I found it fascinating. Maybe it was some kind of subliminal imprint there? Like my aunt who had the bull dogs who were the school mascots? Huge scary pups who were lap dogs in disguise. When you are an adult you will grow to love tattoos and bull dogs? Sounds kind of logical actually:D

I agree 100%!! What people do with their own bodies is their own business. I had to bite my tongue when one of our daughters got her third tattoo. But, it was entirely her decision... all are able to be covered with typical clothing... and she makes well into the six figures as a corporate executive. I just have trouble when someone is inked and/or pierced and then have an issue with an employer who decides not to hire based on the ink or piercings. Just as it is one's own business what they do with their body, it is an employer's choice to be discriminatory in hiring due to the choices one makes with ink or piercings.

I have one piercing, left ear, which an ex-girlfriend did some 20 years ago. We were both in our 50's. She thought it was sexy, so I let her do it. After we broke up I kept it in and still wear one. Wife thinks it's sexy, too, win-win.
