Pig heart transplanted into a human

Could not bring it up. Why a pig heart instead of a human heart?
Quote: A man is doing well after the first successful transplant of a pig heart into a human body, possibly opening a new path for those facing an overburdened donor system, according to the University of Maryland.

The Food and Drug Administration on New Year’s Eve gave emergency authorization for David Bennett, 57, to receive a genetically modified pig heart, the University of Maryland Medical Center said. Bennett, who had been deemed ineligible for a conventional heart transplant, had been hospitalized for six weeks with a life-threatening arrhythmia and was connected to a heart-lung bypass machine.

well i hope he does OK
obviously if he had been deemed ineligible for a conventional transplant he did not have much to lose agreeing to be a guinea pig for these surgeons who needed a human test.

The article also states "There are simply not enough donor human hearts available to meet the long list of potential recipients". Very sad, but I hope he lives a long healthy life, not only for his sake but for the sake of many others who may be in similar circumstances.

I have a pig valve. I chose it over a mechanical valve
The doctors said it would last 10 yrs, it's lasted 14 so far.

Funny story: when I got home after heart surgery, all I ate was bacon..lol.
Morning noon and night! 🐖🐖🐖
An old friend had a pig valve as well. It lasted about 20 years, then he had a second put in. I don`t remember how long the second lasted, but it was quite a while. He is no longer with us but he would be around 90 now so that`s not surprising.

I'm still having trouble with this sort of thing, but I'm working on it.

It's hard for me to understand how we manipulate the laws of nature for our benefit and accept the unthinkable as a routine part of life.

Somehow it reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells.

Mechanical valves are a problem as one has to be extra careful of blood clots. Pig valves have been in use for eons now. More effective.

Yes. When I was given the choice, and after doing my research, that is the main reason I went w/the pig valve.

2 people I knew had the mechanical valve and had died from complications. Plus, you have to take blood thinners.
I"m happy w/my choice.

Does anyone remember when First Lady Barbara Bush got a pig heart valve?

Bush, like many patients, was suffering from shortness of breath due to aortic stenosis. This valvular disease results from a narrowing of the heart valve which may occur due to congenital factors, calcification or infection.

Dr. Gerald Lawrie, a heart surgeon at the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, replaced the aortic valve with a biological tissue valve that was most likely a pig valve or a cow valve. Doctor Lawrie stated, “I expect her to recover fully and soon resume her normal activities,” Lawrie said.

"The man being heralded as a medical pioneer, David Bennett Sr., was the same man who'd been convicted in 1988 of stabbing her younger brother seven times, leaving him paralyzed. "

"His son, David Bennett Jr., who works as a physical therapist in North Carolina, also said several hospitals had declined to accept his father onto the waiting list because he had failed in the past to follow doctors' orders and attend follow-up visits. He also didn't take his medication consistently."

Maybe that is why the story went cold

When someone says to him, "Well, aren't you a bit of a pig......"
I've heard of someone having a "Change of Heart," but......

They said on the news here, he was too frail & needed something right now & could not wait on a human heart. This pig's heart is genatalicy altered they said so it will not be rejected by his body. It will help fill the gap of people waiting on a human heart.
This is the accurate news on this. It is not just a heart taken straight out of a regular pig. It is a pig that had been looked over for quite sometime with a genetically altered heart and the man who made this choice did not have the option to wait for a human heart. So it was either this or he was going to die. So he took the chance.
