DENVER -- A United Airlines pilot has been charged with criminal mischief for allegedly using an ax to destroy a barrier gate at an employee parking lot at Denver's airport, telling authorities he was trying to help several drivers exit and "he just hit his breaking point.”

Kenneth Henderson Jones, 63, is accused of repeatedly striking the metal parking arm with a long-handled ax Aug. 2, knocking it off of its base and then fleeing on foot when a lot attendant confronted him. The employee told investigators he was able to grab the weapon from Jones during a scuffle near a security fence. The pilot then ran into a nearby field, where he was taken into custody by Denver police.

According to a report by the Adams County Sheriff's Office, Jones told a deputy that about six vehicles were behind each of the parking lot's three exit gates, so he retrieved the ax from his parked car to help the drivers leave.

“Kenneth started by saying he just hit his breaking point,” the report stated.

Pilot accused of destroying parking barrier at Denver airport with an ax says he hit breaking point

Ok, I get it. I've done my time getting in and out of airports but I don't think I want this guy piloting my plane.

So The Pilot chops down a parking barrier with an axe...then runs into a field where he is apprehended.

I can just imagine him around the family dinner table that evening. "So how was your day, Honey?"

honestly anyone can reach a breaking point................ but thanks to security cameras or every one being a camera for a persons worst moment it becomes public fodder.
there is a lot more to story we simple do not have ...... was thing malfunctioning and that is why it was backed up?
many things in life happen and we will never know what type of stress beyond his job etc this person has..... maybe his life is falling apart maybe he just had a bad health diagnosis what is he suppose to air all his problems to garner sympathy ?

I dislike the media playing this up but clicks equal $$ so put this person through continued stress ... jump on the pile. SMH

I see your point about the media but on the other hand what might he do if he's in a line of 40 planes waiting to take off in iffy weather and he's the last one in line? There are some professions where you just can't afford to lose your temper.

However, I've been in those parking lot lines and it's probably just as well I didn't have an axe.

This is a supposed 'stable' Pilot of a commercial airliner losing his shit on a parking barrier with an axe. I think it is certainly newsworthy.
he was off the job going home or maybe hotel who knows ... do all professions maintain a facade when off the clock? he is i am assuming HUMAN did not say robot pilot ...... what other professions are not allowed to have a mental snap and does that require 24/7 monitoring.

many people in stressful jobs are fine on the job but when they are on their OWN time someone obviously did not use their stress relief valve.

what items does a person have in their car again is different for everyone .... my spouse always has his golf clubs he might snap and beat something with them ... lol .......probably not he values his clubs too much. ......
maybe was in car for other reason ... i had one in trunk as son borrowed it then gave it to me when over at his house.... forgot i had it for a month went several places that if i had a meltdown if i remembered i could have used.

@Jeni

You'd get on board a flight with this unstable lunatic at the helm?
No one knows if they may have already got on board ......no one knows when someone will snap and NOW that this guy has snapped ONCE we all decide he is a loose cannon forever......
simply put like i said in another thread ... people simply do NOT know and judging anyone by their profession is not accurate or logical.

I saw a cook at a local restaurant spit while on break ..........am i to assume he may spit in all the food and never go back...... if you stop and think about it you may never eat out again....

this has become a past time for IMO too many people watching a video clip with minimal facts and playing.... judge and jury.....psychologist

where is the criticism of the airport parking staff ( airline staff have zero control over airport items) to not control or calm the situation or use an override on arm .....
OH that is right most likely a minimum wage person that cannot be ridiculed. judging by profession.

Did anyone watch the video? It sounds like there is a good possibility they will take him back. For one thing they are short on pilots and if this is a one-off he is probably as good as anyone else who could also have a meltdown. I just don't want to be part of his second one but as passengers we have no say anyway.

Did you forget the part about the axe...then running away like a little school girl into a field? And you want this guy flying your plane?

No i did not ..... had an ax so what was in his parked car .... what is the big deal ....
if someone snaps then calms down enough to think WTH did i just do............. perhaps he was embarrassed or knowing this would be internet fodder for the masses........ i would run off to try to collect myself .....

Look at the stats on drunk pilots.... it used to be worse ,,, Northwest Airlines which i believe was bought by Delta was the worst ...

Drunk OK but a BUT A mental health break event is damned for life.....
seems like we find out why there is a mental health crisis and no one seeks treatment..... unless they have a nothing job because people judge as a lunatic.
if he changed out of his uniform and NO one knew who he was................ would people even care just some person who lost it. the word PILOT made this story.

do you run a background check on all pilots when you fly?
This guy made the cardinal sin of being taped and loaded to internet.

@Jeni

When it comes to your Pilot, there's a certain expectation. Sure, he can get a tad grumpy with the air traffic controllers if there is a delay.

HE TOOK AN AXE TO A PARKING BARRIER!

Why do you keep defending this off-the-rails madman?

Can you imagine this guy just landed and found that a plane is parked at his gate and he can't get to it?
