Pilot and co-pilot killed after Air Canada jet collision at LaGuardia New York

This was a terrible accident. The whole cockpit was torn from the plane.

I heard on CBS news that the fire truck was given permission to cross the runway. The plane was ordered to pull up and the fire truck was then ordered to “Stop Short,” meaning to stop short of crossing the runway. This could be miscommunications, by the air and/or ground controllers.

Whichever it was, it was an avoidable incursion that should not have happened. My condolences to the families of the deceased and my prayers go out to the firemen and passengers that suffered injuries for a complete recovery.

I never liked working out of LaGuardia. My favorite airport in New York was always JFK. IMO, they had the very best air traffic controllers in the country.

How horrible. I wonder why the fire truck ignored the controller yelling at him to stop? The driver initially had been given the go-ahead to proceed, but when it was apparent, he had to stop, he did not.
Just guessing, but perhaps because the driver of the fire truck was given permission to cross the runway, the driver may have been confused and thought the controller was talking to a different truck driver. If I was going to play Monday morning arm chair quarterback and I was the ATC, I would have ordered the plane to go around, instead of giving instructions to the truck and the plane. I am sure it will be close to a year before a final report from the NTSB will be released. There should be a preliminary report issued in about 30-60 days.

I just spent a lot of time reading eyewitness accounts and what an experienced pilot that flies out of laguardia said after listening to the recording. The plane had already landed so it could not go around.

The weather was terrible and visibility low as it was raining hard and because the air traffic controller didn’t use the call sign ( probably not correct terminology for what he should have said so the truck understood the message was for them) for the truck so the truck may not have realized that the stop was for them. They also said these trucks carry a lot of water and are huge so it’s more like hitting a tank.

The basic problem that was reported has been an issue for quite a while in that air traffic controllers are short staffed, causing them to work long hours often six days a week. I read that LaGuardia in particular is very short staffed. This leads to extreme fatigue on the part of the controller and the controller was handling both air traffic and ground traffic.

I heard early morning that quite a few passengers on the plane were hurt, some of them badly. I think that perhaps, as the plane was already on the ground, that some of them had taken their seat belts off already.
It is very sad.
The USA needs to absolutely modernize their system in the Air Traffic Control, train their people and hire enough people to maintain safety.
@ oldman I agree with you on LaGuardia. I never liked to fly out of there, I prefer JFK as well. (I used to listen to Kennedy Steve an ATC at JFK. He was quite a hoot!)
There is a series of YouTube videos on Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam Airport). They have the state of the art Air Traffic system. I was quite interested in it because I worked at that airport when I was young. Their system is very sophisticated.
