Sure. I occasionally made pin curls myself. My older cousin was a majorette at her high school and they all wore their hair in long pageboys . The ends were curled under, starting at the ear and tapering to end in a point between their shoulder blades. It was all created with a long row of pin curls.

Yep, my mom did that.

And there were those little rubber spongy things that folded down over the hair and themselves. The name is right there. And now it's like that song that gets trapped in your head, it won't go away until the answer is found.

I still remember my great aunt sitting at the kitchen table, without her teeth, chain smoking, and enjoying a glass of beer, wearing a full apron and having her hair done up in tight pin curls.

I’m thankful that I grew up in the 70s, when all that was required was a running a comb through my hair after a shower.

I thought those were called "curlers," Robin, but I could be thinking of something else.

My mom set her hair with pin-curls until about 1962 when everyone started using "rollers." The first ones had the diameter of a dime and they got bigger every year until they were about 3" in diameter in order to make the bouffant, almost-straight flips of the late 1960's.

I began setting my mothers hair for her at the roller phase because she couldn't get the hang of it herself. We had our best mother-daughter conversations during those sessions.

One time (only) I went to the supermarket like that because I was having company later and needed something for what I was cooking. I guess my hair wasn't dry yet. To my amazement a boy in line asked me out to a party that night. Desperation I guess.

OK, I had to find them. They were called spoolies. Because that's pretty much what they looked like. Curlers to me are like what @Della showed a pic of.

NO, BJ, I was married. Too bad, because he seemed like a guy who would still love me at my worst.

I found her. Miss Kanawha County Majorette from (my) Nitro High School 1956. Those huge band festivals at night under the lights were awesome. You can see that our girl started with a pin-curl set that went a little wild in the humidity before hairspray was invented, but she sure looks happy.
