Please Doesn’t Serve Me This

When I was kid in Florida in the early 1960's, there was a store called Piggly Wiggly. On one of the shelves, I saws one dusty can labelled Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers. The price if I remember correctly was $1.29. Every week when we went to the store, I would check to see if anyone bought the can of grasshoppers. No one ever did. The store just left it there in case someone was willing to shell out that money for the dead bugs covered in chocolate. Finally one day, I discovered it was gone. I think the store gave up waiting for someone to buy it.

In a flier for a mainstream grocery store, I saw Stewing Goat Meat was $22 a kg (approx $10 a pound). Product of New Zealand.

They couldn’t even give me this.

Anyone ever see strange or unknown foods in your regular grocery store?

I've eaten braised goat in the Caribbean. At first, I was surprised to discover it was served with small bones in it. There was no problem after I became aware of them. It was delicious. No one else was eating it, lol. Also, no problem, I'm used to being the only one. I wouldn't hesitate to eat it again if I were in the proper situation.

There's a farm a few towns from me that sells goat, but I haven't bought it.

I've eaten goose out of curiosity but found that it's not for me. I like duck if it's properly prepared. I've cooked farm-raised guinea hen; it's tasty but scrawny. One hen barely feeds three people.

I see bags of frozen goat chunks in my local market and also several new to me items in the produce section.

I’m curious about them all and wouldn’t mind trying them but because I’m not at all familiar with them I would probably need to sample several dishes from various cooks to be sure that I have given them a fair chance.

I grew up in a family of hunters, farmers, and foragers so I have tried many things and enjoyed some more than others.

I only had roasted raccoon once that I remember and it reminded my of roast pork.

Which brings to mind people always saying that such n such tastes like chicken. If it tastes like chicken, I’ll stick with chicken. 😉🤭😂

Had rabbit. It tasted like chicken but was very lean. There were small bones that had to be removed as well, but it cooked up nicely and tasted really good.

I remember one time watching QI and Stephen Fry told one of the others on the show that if you eat just rabbit and nothing else you'll starve to death. Apparently rabbit is missing some ensyme that allows your body to metabolise it. However, if you mix the rabbit with any other food, the ensymes in that food will allow your body to break down the rabbit and absorb it without problems.

So as long as you eat rabbit in a stew or suchlike, you'll not starve.

Out of interest, those of you who won't eat Goose or duck..I presume you eat chicken ?... what makes geese and duck different to you ?
It may come to the way the goose and duck that I’ve eaten was prepared.

I’ve only had wild goose and it was stringy dark
meat with an unfamiliar flavor along with the occasional bit of buckshot.

I do like duck cooked with sauerkraut but was never a fan of the duck a la orange that was popular in restaurants years ago.

I would like to try a crispy Chinese style duck.

I’m sure that some of the more current quickly prepared recipes for duck breast would be fine.

I agree , if certain foods are served the wrong way, then it would put one off....

I'm not keen on duck L'Orange either, because duck meat is sweet.. so with the added orange sauce it's too sweet... but I do love Crispy duck with Hoisin sauce.. it's my favourite take away from the Chinese restaurant..

..but actually what I was referring to is the folks that haven't tried either duck or goose and determined not to, but are happy to eat chicken:unsure:

Another thing is I love Duck eggs..they are bigger and have a much more substantial almost meaty taste to them compared to hens eggs... they're more expensive , but I buy them a couple of times a year

If I remember correctly Costco do duck eggs. They are indeed huge, and I'll have to get some one day when we're over there, and try them. 👍

We have a lot of chinese restaurants in the UK, and crispy duck is a staple menu item. It's really nice, especially with the bamboo shoots they serve it with, and plum sauce, with the whole lot served in steamed very thin soft wraps.
I like to have Hoisin sauce along with the plum sauce.... I actully keep several jars here at home for when I buy duck in the supermarket..I;m not overkeen on Bamboo shoots

I understand.

Growing up, we were encouraged to try everything before we formed an opinion.

We also got conned occasionally by being told that we weren’t old enough or grown up enough to appreciate various things, that worked every time. 😉🤭😂

Tried goat as well and disliked it immensely. Once a neighbor gave me a freshly killed young goat that I butchered (and ate entirely) and another was goat meat from a local grower. Both had a “barnyard” flavor! And I am one that loves wild meats like deer, grouse, wild turkey, and (grey) squirrel.
I wouldn't eat grey squirrel..they're really rats with tails..... Deer is ok, but it's got no fat on it really which means it can be tough and too gamey... in saying that it's high protein levels mean its better for you, than beef, pork or lamb

Yeah, the skinned animal does look like a rat 😁 But growing up I saw plenty of them as my dad and brother hunted for food since our family income was quite low when I was younger. So I associate this all with my favorite meal of squirrel, wild mushrooms, potatoes and squirrel gravy, acorn squash, and bread pudding.

Of moose, deer, elk, buffalo, duck and goose, elk would be my favourite. I don’t seek any of these out any more.

We ate quite a bit of venison.

The backstrap was considered a prized delicacy but much of the rest was used in recipes with a tomato based sauce or ground mixed with pork.

The age of a deer, how it was killed, and how the carcass was handled all have an impact on the taste and quality of the meat.

In this area deer have become a problem in the city and suburbs. Some areas have had sharpshooters come in periodically to thin the herds.

The meat from those kills and from private donations are processed free by butchers and provided to local food pantries.

Has anyone had Whale meat ?... It's not been available in this country in my lifetime that know of...however I do know for sure that when meat was in seriously short supply during the rationing in WW2 for 15 years.. ( even tho' the war finished in 45.. rationing wasn't lifted until 1954 on many things) ... and the housewives were given Whale meat as a substitute.. and even then on a starvation diet, they thought it was horrible...

Holly, I tried to roast a duck when I was a kid. It was an abject failure. I've never tried again. Instead, we always went to a Chinese restaurant for Sichuan Duck, which is wonderful.
I've never had goose.
