Plus sign + and x sign to open, save or close Tabs in Firefox is suddenly missing on toolbar

Not sure what I did, but the New Tab plus and close signs in the toolbar on Firefox are suddenly gone. I looked for help online and found nothing that worked. Also now, oddly enough, the big X in the upper right corner to close the browser is not showing either. Just used it this afternoon and everything was normal.

I've wasted a lot of time on this and my eyes are tired from trying to read solutions. I'm going to the Microsoft Edge browser for tonight, at least there I can open, close tabs and the browser.

I have windows 11 and the default browser is Microsoft Edge, but I loaded Firefox some time ago and this is only a problem today.

Any easy fixes, I don't know much about computers and my eyesight is getting bad, so I'd appreciate something very simple. Thanks to anyone with advice on this.

First, when in Firefox, try right-clicking on the empty screen area up near the upper right corner, just to the left of the "Minimize" icon. That should give you a drop down menu that has "Customize Toolbar." Click on that and see if there's anything in there like a Plus sign or maybe it'll say "New Tab." If so, grab on that and drag it up to where it used to be. If there's no Plus or New Tab icon, way down at the bottom of the screen, lower right corner, there's a "Restore Defaults" button, maybe try that.

If that doesn't work, I've heard that this can be sometimes caused by a faulty or corrupted Firefox extension, so you can try starting Firefox up in Safe Mode and seeing if you can find the problem-causing extension.

Good luck.

Restart Firefox in troubleshooting (safe) mode.
That will eliminate any add-on or extension as a culprit as they are disabled for troubleshooting mode.
Firefox Troubleshooting Mode
If in troubleshooting mode with add-ons and extensions disabled, see if all the (x)'s and ( +)'s and such return.
Restart Firefox in regular mode and disable add-ons and extensions one at a time until you find the culprit.
Sometimes just running in troubleshooting mode and returning to normal mode will correct the problem.

Go to the stacked three line icon in the upper right of Firefox and select "Add-ons and Themes".
Make sure you have "System Theme - Auto" (default) enabled.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I ended up just "refreshing" Firefox, and the tab toolbar was back to normal.

Refresh Firefox

  1. Click the menu button
    Fx89menuButton
, click Help and select More Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click Refresh Firefox… then Refresh Firefox in the confirmation window that opens. Firefox will close to refresh itself.
  3. When finished, a window will list your imported information. Click the Finish button. Firefox will open.
  4. Select whether you want Firefox to restore all or some windows and tabs and click the Let's go! button.
