Pope Francis allegedly uses an offensive slur against gay men

It's not just the term, which is bad enough, it's the CONTEXT in which he used it. He was saying there are already too many gay men seeking to become priests.

Pope apologizes after being quoted using vulgar term about gay men in talk about ban on gay priests

Both the context and the term are pretty awful. I'm walking away from this argument now. Not my problem. The Catholics can fight about it amongst themselves.
I don't see any argument here....

"Last year, he described laws that criminalise homosexuality as a 'sin' and an 'injustice', and allowed Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples in a significant advance for LGBT rights in the church."

Seems the Pope's stance (last year) on that matter carries more weight than an "alledged" slur. I agree with @fuzzybuddy who wrote "Pope Francis is the most gay friendly Pope ever"

Absolutely right... if it fit in the context, it sure sounds as if he at least knew the word and what he was saying. I'll tell ya why this whole thing bothers me, @VintageBetter ... hearing excuses made for this guy... he's old, he didn't know the language, yadda yadda. BUT if any of our politicians... or conservative actors, sports figures, etc. had said the very same thing, they would be crucified and "cancelled." I'm not Catholic, but I'd like to think I would see the same hypocrisy even if I were.

Spot on.

He said something he shouldn't have. I don't think the word he used is appropriate, but frankly it's exactly the kind of thing I'd expect a Catholic to say, at least, a devout Catholic. Catholic's, like all religions, have some weird ideas about the world, and their entire belief is predicated on there being non-believers to think the worse of. Sadly, I think this is more of a PR mistake than a misspoke belief.

The Pope did not recommend blessing the union of gay couples. He didn't mean that at all. He meant as humans (catholic ones) they can be blessed, but not their fusion. He said gays can be blessed but not because they are gay or coupled together. Their marriage is not being blessed, they are.

And.....this is why I'm not Catholic - the whole Pope, nuns and priest thing. None of it makes any sense to me. Many people will condemn him but many more people will take his words to be signs from God. It's a big ol' bureaucracy and he's the CEO. It's all just strange to me.

But, some of my best friends have been Catholic. I like them as people, but I will never be able to join their church. It's OK. To each their own.
And why many others choose to be NOT Catholic

Don't expect Catholics to ever embrace allowing gay priests and to continue to remove them as it is backed by solid Bible doctrine whether or not that is right or wrong through today's modern societal lens. Preventing priests from marrying is perhaps the greatest past blunder in the church's history quite against our human innate creaturely nature and obviously was not the result of some divine inspiration. Rather, in The Middle Ages as the church was increasingly dominated by Roman political types, was a way to prevent the transfer of church land ownership via marriage. Satan if he exists, was probably immediately rolling on the ground laughing.

All matters considered, Francis has been a pretty good, forward looking pope. Given the ugly history of the church and the open secret of massive homosexuality and pedophilia within the ranks of a priesthood that's sworn to celibacy, I understand his remarks.

Of course, a better way to solve this is to open up the priesthood to women, and to remove the archaic celibacy requirement by permitting priests to be married.
Given the way the Catholic Church operates, that will take another 10 centuries to come to pass...don't want to rush into anything too quickly. :p

Exactly, and did anyone ever show that if this earthly creation is Satan's playground, then everything, every word, every statement, every deed can be perceived as the work of Satan. The Pope included. Satan has the power to deceive. Is Satan the Pope? Is God Satan?

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression that ā€œthey wouldn’t touch (a certain person) with a ten-foot pole!ā€œ Would a ā€œknocker upperā€ then have used an eleven-foot pole, or perhaps a Hungarian? šŸ¤”
