Porch Pirates struck yesterday

A porch pirate hit my house yesterday.

My brother-in-law called and said the Amazon package he sent me had been delivered. I trotted out to the porch and there it was....ripped open.

Luckily, the box of chocolate covered biscotti was still in the box.

I called him back and asked him if they had sent him the usual pic of the box sitting on the doormat. They had and it was sitting on what definitely was my doormat, still sealed.

When i went out on the porch, it had been neatly opened, just a little ragged around the tape. According to Amazon, it had been delivered 6 minutes before. There must have been someone following the Amazon truck. We've had that before in the neighborhood.

B-I-L and I are both a little insulted that the Pirate didn't deem the gourmet biscotti worth stealing.....LOL.

Thats' what they do..they follow the delivery van, and strike the second the van pulls away before the home owner gets to the door.... if you had a ring doorbell you would have been able to get a good view of their vehicle as well as them

Were you at home when it was delivered?

I'm glad you got your biscotti. Another reason for me not to use Amazon. Their packages get it more than anyone else's.

Why do people think that others will not steal stuff off your porch?
I don't think there's a section of the "criminal's ethics code" that forbids swiping stuff of porches.
Would you leave your open wallet on your porch? Maybe your big screen TV would be safe on your porch?
Why are people amazed that others will walk up and take packages, when the packages are in plain sight, in the open, unguarded and ripe for the picking?
I'm not minimizing the crime, but a big box sitting on a porch loudly says "take me" to some.

If there's a chance they'll get caught, most people will refrain from committing a crime.

I have security cameras set up — mainly as a deterrent. If somebody wants to steal something, they're going to think twice about doing it on my property. Or doing anything un-neighborly. Before I set up the cameras, about once a week, I'd find dog poop on my front lawn. That hasn't happened since.

I don’t understand the whole porch pirate thing.

It seems like the risk would outweigh the potential reward.

What are the odds of finding something useful, the correct size, or of sufficient value to make it worthwhile.

It seems like other forms of criminal activity would be more lucrative. 🤔

I had a delivery from Amazon and it was just an empty envelope type package. I rushed out to the driver and showed her. The package was sliced open on the top. She called Amazon at some location and said they would take care of it. However, I didn't receive any information so went on Amazon and they gave me credit for the product. I think it must have been opened and stolen from an employee along the route to my door. It was some kitchen knives and would have been heavy in the package. Anyway, that was my experience with a stolen package.
