"Possessions"??

Headed somewhere today with the wife in the car. The radio was tuned to a "Classic Country" station. An old favorite, "There Goes My Everything" came on. The video that follows is the one I remember most and the one that was playing. Other artists have done later renditions of the song.

The singer's wife is leaving him. As she is walking out the door, he's saying "There goes my only possession. There goes my everything." My wife said, "I wonder how quickly that song would be shut down today. Women would not stand to be referred to as 'possessions'!? I have to agree. Certainly disrespectful of any lady, let alone one who has shared a portion of your life. Can't count the number of times I've sang along with this as I have been driving down the highway. Just a glimpse into 'yesterday' and what we applauded then that we would probably think twice about doing so today.

 

I love all those old classic country songs. Yes, today they probably would try and make a big deal out of the word possession as they do everything else.

I agree with you Ruth, they probably would try and make a big deal about it like they do everything else these days. I see that he possessed her love, and now that she's leaving him, he lost his everything. I don't see it as disrespectful at all, wouldn't have in the past and wouldn't now in my 60s....no strong confident woman would, in my opinion.

Grumpy, did your wife think it was disrespectful?

My wife's comment was "I bet they couldn't play that today." Sad thing is, we had a young kid walk past our house yesterday. His cell phone was blaring "music" similar to what the old boom boxes did. The four-letter words that were part of this "song" were embarrassing to even me. He was walking towards a shopping center and, I assume, would not have turned it down even when in the area with women and children. Some, today, would complain about an old country song that meant no harm while profanity laced music played in the background that they'd have no problem with.

That's true Grumpy, but those who would complain about a song like you posted while being just fine with the vulgar sexist lyrics that some blare in the streets these days, don't deserve any respect as far as I'm concerned, just consider the source....'nuff said. That's fodder for a whole separate thread. :D

The recipient of the "Valentine" deserves far better than whoever the writer or sender is!!

All love songs are goofy. You're not to take them seriously.
 
I saw Jack Greene at the Grand Old Opry before he passed and he did sing this song. I used to go to the Opry a lot more when they always had some of the old classic stars on stage. Ronnie Milsap made an unscheduled appearance on one night that I was there. I considered that a special treat.

I hear a lot of songs with today's so-called music that I find offensive, yet nobody seems to give a hoot. Listen to some of the rap that is being played on the radio. Half of those songs should be rated "X". If a person is OK with the F-bombs and use of the 'N' word in songs (?), then how could anyone be offended if a husband called his wife his possession.

My vows included love,honor and obey...
I believe that's been removed.
My hubby loved to tease that I promised to obey him,
Still miss him though
