Fontella Bass came from a deep family tradition of music-- her grandmother was gospel performer Navada Carter, her mother was Martha Bass of the Clara Ward Singers, and her younger brother was the late singer David Peaston ("Two Wrongs (Don't Make A Right)"). She was married to jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie before he passed in 1999
Bass grew up singing in church and performing with her family, but as a teenager her interests brought her to more secular music and she began performing in nightclubs in St. Louis.

What do you want to make those eyes at me for - Emile Ford and the Checkmates.

This song brings back happy memories of my lovely dad. 1960... on leave from the Middle East. He knew how much I liked Adam Faith at the time so he took me to Blackpool to see him. Alongside Adam were Emile Ford and the Checkmates and The John Barry Seven. :)🎸
