I always liked this one, too. My aunt always played it often when my uncle was in 'Nam. Trivia you may or may not know about Barry Sadler. He found himself part of a love triangle and ended up killing his girlfriend's ex who kept harassing them.Although I have always been anti-war, and loved anti- war songs, never the less, I also have always loved this song too.
Shot the ex between the eyes thinking he saw a flash of metal and thought the ex had a gun although it turned out he was unarmed. He was sentenced to 4-5 years (manslaughter) but got it lowered to 30 days working in a workhouse. Yep, 30 days and he served 28 of them.
Here comes the bizarre part... Sadler moved to Guatemala and in '88 was shot in the head while sitting in a cab. Witnesses said he accidentally did it himself but others speculated it was part of a robbery. It caused severe brain damage and he was a quadriplegic. Came back to the states, went missing in '89 after hospital release. He was found, but never recovered from the shooting and died a few days after he turned 49.
