World Music can encompass several genres outside of the Pop, Rock, Gospel, R & B and Jazz genres. There is a lot of exotic World Music out there. Let us hear your favorites. I'll start with this one. I connected with the group leader, Mustafa (sitting on floor, has ponytail) decades ago on My Space. I asked about what they were saying in this song and he sent me the English translation. I wish I had saved it other than on My Space, which I left several years ago. His father is also a musician and either wrote or co-wrote the song. I love this video...the look of peace and happiness on their faces; it always makes me smile. @Pecos @Old Salt @Pinky @MarkinPhx

Love it! Must check my DNA again!

Yes, check that DNA again. :D I'm so glad you love it. I forgot which country Mustafa is from but Wiki says some of the band members are American, others from Indonesia. The band is currently based in Indonesia. I think Mustafa may be Turkish or Iranian.

I remember hearing The Bonnie Banks...it's a classic. She has a beautiful voice.

When I first got their album, Primal Magic, I must've listened to this song 1,000 times! I know my son was sick of hearing it. I don't know much of what he's singing but the leader's voice is so earnest and compelling. This is some of the best guitar playing you'll ever hear and when the flute comes in the groove is fantastic! @Rossana The Gypsy Kings music reminds me of Struntz and Farah. @Pecos @Old Salt @Pinky

Great! I know they are not even close but your song reminded me of this one:

From Argentina. Music by Astor Piazzola, the father of "New Tango," with lyrics by Fernando Solanas. Music performed by Gotan Project.

Vuelvo al Sur (I return to the South)

I return to the South,
The way one always returns to love,
I return to you,
With my wish, with my fear.

I carry the South,
Like a destiny of the heart,
I am of the South,
Like the airs of the bandoneon.

I dream the South,
Immense moon, sky upside down,
I search for the South,
The sunny days, and what comes after.

I love the South,
Its good people, its dignity,
I feel the South,
Like your body in intimate moments.

I love you, South ...

I like your selection! Reminds me of a time when people still danced! LOL But It also reminds me of how much I love Latin American Music:

Northernlight...I love The Gotan Project. I first heard their music in the movie with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. She was teaching him to tango to this. I immediately purchased the song. Okay @Old Salt ...I know you'll love this. Your DNA is going to be all over the place.

Then I heard this in a restaurant, was intrigued and Soundhounded it. Lo and behold it was Gotan Project. I downloaded this one too. It's something to watch them perform "live" too (onYouTube).

This is kind of cool...
Interesting exchange! Did you know that Nora Jones is Ravi Shankar's daughter? I'll never forget, early one morning upon waking up, I had what I call a "knowing" about his death two weeks before he passed away. The strange thing is I was never "into" him nor did I listen to his music so I don't know why he popped into my mind like that.

Fantastic thread! Thank you everybody for sharing this great music! I am truly enjoying it, learning and appreciating the contents.
@OneEyedDiva and @Old Salt, I also like Strunz and Farah. I used to listen to them along with Ottmar Liebert (also a great guitarist)
Interesting about Nora Jones' dad. I started to listen to her in early 2005. I really like her songs and music.
You're welcome, of course. Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback❣️ I'm so glad you are enjoying the thread. I remember Ottmar Liebert but don't think I've heard much by him. The first song I heard by Nora Jones, which I bought immediately, was Don't Know Why. Though not my usual fare, that song just grabbed me. She's a beautiful, talented woman.

One of the best bands ever and at the top of the list of my favorites (since 1970) is Mandrill. The nucleus of the group are the Wilson Brothers who were born in Panama but grew up in NY. The group features Ric Wilson, MD (cardiology) on sax and percussions. Their songs encompass a few genres, including Funk and Rock. But the first here is simply exotic. The second is Latin. Unfortunately, Lou Wilson who introduced the band passed away 10 years ago. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert at a small venue decades ago and it's an experience I'll never forget.
